contristo
I'm using a Tangiers phunnel bowl, so poking a hole in the center is vital for airflow. However, a few minutes into every session, pieces of very tiny coal are sucked into the middle hole every time I breathe in. I have tried to make the holes smaller, but then they get too small and I get thin smoke and harshness.I'm curious how to prevent this. Every time a little piece of coal is sucked in, it becomes unbearably harsh immediately
SimplexCoda
The few times i have used foil on my phunnel i havent had to have a hole in the middle. So i would say try it without.
no longer welcome
I actually don't pole holes in the center of the phunnel bow, i do pack it high with tangiers and nakhla and poke all the way through many holes to the bottom of the bowl with a regular toothpick, however, nothing over the center. that will probably stop coal from falling through. Zinite
I rarely poke a hole in the center. If you pack the tobacco higher than the center hole, it wont get sucked down over it. I can't find the pictures, but Indian_villager took the metal piece out of a small binder clip:and placed the loop end inside the bowl so the ends were sticking slightly out of the rim, keeping the foil up. mushrat
If the coal is getting sucked into the center its going down the center hole into the water, shouldn't be effecting the harshness. Yu may have other issues.I cluster a bunch of small holes in the center to kee the foil from being sucked down here in the bar.

Sonthert
I use a bunch of smaller holes over the phunnel.+1 on the water stopping the coal...thats what its for.
evilded777
That IS very clever. I am in the "few small holes" crowd... started with the big hole in the middle, and didn't care for it. I also agree in that I think your problem lies elsewhere... if its going down the hole in the middle, it is likely ending up in the water.
