The wood smells really nice when you cut it. Very dense stuff. The way I understand it there is a type of oil like olive oil the wood is saturated with. Hell, it may be olive oil. Rani
Yummy..... Most people end up sticking to about a half dozen flavors generally, so I could definitely see having a bowl for each flavor and it just soaking deeper and deeper into the wood over time until it's just saturated with flavor.....You might need to add some of them to your stuff you're offering!'Rani

The precut foil I use engulfed the bowl so I trimmer it with a razor. I picked olive wood for several reasons. Mainly after I read it was right on up there with briar as one of the best woods for tobacco. The next that it is gorgeous wood and the next it's history. I think that you would want to only smoke favorite flavors until it got conditioned. Wiping the inside with a light layer of olive oil may make cleaning and ghosting less of a problem. I need to see what cleaning this is like. Giant Ninja Robot
Concern, Scalli, ok firwst off very very very cool idea and execution...now concern. As a briar pipe smoker th3e idea is thsat one builds up a cake that increases a good heat and keeps the bowl from eventually cracking, and brair ia TOUGH stuff. So how would this bowl manage over time? I would imagine that one could clean it to avoid an unwanted buildup after every session, especially with a tobacco like Nakhla that tends to leave a hard tough residue. However wouldn't the heat eventually crack the bowl?Granted I have NO concept of how different the heat is from briar to shisha bowl, I'm assuming the shisha bowl probably holds much less heat.Just some random thoughts, but you amaze again dear Scalli. When you smoke out of a tobacco pipe you directy light the tobacco and it burns directy in the bowl all the way to the bottom. My theory is that is much more harsh on the wood than our coal heating method. Again it's only theory. With the bowl having a 1/4" wall thickness I don't want to thin the area much where the tobacco chamber is and especially at the lip. But only time will really tell. My gut feeling is when cleaning to use a plastic knife or something less prone to gouging the walls. Zyram
looks awesome, one of those things you'd pull out on the special occasions to awe the guests =) My only concern would be cleanup and ghosting, for me 40$ a bowl is too much to get one for each of several different flavors, so I'd want to make sure it doesn't ghost too much. I'd definitely pick one up though, beautiful bowl Scalli! I'm still really looking forward to some of your Herbal shisha too! Keep up the good work man, you come up with so much hookah stuff it's amazing.-Z

Keep up the good work man, you come up with so much hookah stuff it's amazing.-ZThanks Z. If I can get the wood cheaper and come up with an easier way of making them I'd come down on the price and give peeps that paid the $40 a discount to offset for the first one. So if they went to $30 I'd let a previous buyer buy one at $20 for every one they paid $40 for. At least it seems like a fair deal that way. I wouldn't just send them $10 back though because right now it's still a pain in the ass to make them. A stiff toothbrush or a brass one for cleaning seems the work well. The very top discolor from the heat but it looks kinda cool. I'm trying to find a brass or stainless sewing thimble but on Easter nothing is open. The ones at Walmart are POS zinc plated and plastic ones I want to make the phunnel mod with one of them.I have another idea I'm gonna try with it and if it works it will be neat as hell. Still playing with the herbal as well. No new news there.

Nice idea!I bet. It's kind of like mesquite here is Texas. Except the odd thing is that when you buy milled mesquite they are as proud of the shit as oak I'm hoping my buddy that is leaving Abu Dhabi shortly for Jordan gets a good hookup with someone there that we can get olivewood from.It cost me $25 for a 2x2x12 in piece. So each section for a bowl is $6.25. Add that to lathe time, sawing drilling polishing time, add the tubing and the mod So it's mostly the time it takes to make one that is the real drag. But $6.25 for the little chunk of wood that goes into them is a bit excessive too
Scalliwag
this is a pretty neat ass trick. It's not taking much shisha or coal and now there is no more messing with foil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXm7LVTjFyw
Rani
You guys are talking about ghosting like it's always a bad thing. In this case I don't think it would be. Like some people keep one pipe or hose just for DA...... Just as the best cured casks are reused for wine and whiskey because the ghosting actually intensifies the flavor. Imagine a peach saturated bowl, hmmmm! As far as the cost and life of the bowl, I think you'd have longer life. Scalli, you mentioned about $40.00. The average ceramic Egyptian is running about $7.00 and phunnels are running $14.00 I believe. Jets are $50.00 All of these have one thing in common: Drop 'em on the ground once and you're buying a new one in a hurrry! So I can see someone buying one of these plus a ceramic or jet and having the wood bowl outlive the breakables by a very long time.'Rani

I kinda doubt it but I've doubted a lot of thing and been wrong. You have some valid points as always Rani. The pros are a lot less shisha and less coals. If you are using less shisha for the same or better quality of smoke you save more per use. But more people have to validate any claim I make. As fast as I go thru 250g of SB Peach at $20 a pop I can see it saving me money QUOTE (outbreakpb @ Apr 12 2009, 03:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>you are one crafty son of a gun!!!! nicethanks! Giant Ninja Robot
Scalli, that large bowl on the right is absolutely beautiful. Something about woodcraft and woodworking just gets me happy, I think it has to do with my dad being a woodworker of sorts. Genetics and whatnot. Sorry I wasn't as elaborate with the praise as the concerns in the earlier post but I was in a huryy and when I see new ideas my brain goes into overdrive thinking of the pros and cons etc etc.At any rate, great work, I think once you roll out some of this stuff into the market and start making some dough your wife may change her tune And if it helps out, as commiseration often will, my wife bless her soul has had enough of my hookah mutterings as well A hearty pat on the back to ya sir You're an HF inspiration!
