the chinese phunnels use crappy clay. the original tangiers uses a better quality clay which makes it better for heat management.

That pretty much sums it up. Chinese phunnels do work fine though, I've smoked out of both chinese and original and the difference isn't really that great.

honestly ya. aside from the fact that one will use up more heat to get the same amount of smoke. if there is a real difference in smoke quality it is really minimal. nonetheless though I would recommend you just get a real one from online. the price is probably cheaper than the chinese one in your local shop. http://hookahcompany.com/tangiers_small_fu...l_2070_prd1.htm

My understanding is Tangiers is the creator and originator of the phunnel bowl. So look at it this way..... If it were your creation, which would you want your friends on the forum to buy? Yours or the inferior rip-off?

which bowl would you recommend if im just smoking Af and Nakhla?

Phunnel-wise either will be fine... I'd prefer the tangiers because it uses a little less coal, but it won't make a huge difference.

Honestly though my favorite bowls for Nakhla are discounted egyptian bowls... lots of vendors sell bowls with chips in them for a buck or two each, and they work great. For AF My #1 choice is the standard mya bowl... just works great with very loosely packed AF for some reason.

Yeah, the original thing is just a few bucks more and higher quality. Plus, it's made in the USA. I really don't understand people who would prefer to save $3 and get the knockoff, but to each his or her own.

Original phunnels are stoneware, Chinese phunnels are cast clay. Originals have a rough, stoneware feel and are white on the bottom, where there is no glaze. Fake ones may or may not be white and are smoother and the clay is more plastery.
