Hookie The Hookah
I have no working gas in this apartment so I've had to resort to quicklites against my will for the last 5 months... Any sound method of getting natural coals lit without a stove?

jezter6
Can you get a coil burner from Walgreens? They're like $10 and work wonders on naturals.

Vladimir
I had a similar post going a few threads down and it ended on my question no one answered so I will refresh here so .I just bought one of these Walgreens burners today, I think it will work great. Question is... how often do you have to refresh the natural coals? I smoked yesterday with natural coals and it felt like the burned into oblivion awfully quick. risingphoenix
I used my walgreens burner last night and it took about 7-8 min to light my coconara coals (completely white). I usually leave the ash on the coal and just move it around. The ash seems to insulate the coal and make it last longer. My session last night was a good hour and a half and I still had pea size coals.

I have had Coco's go out but that was because they weren't lit entirely.

jezter6
you probably left them on the burner too long.i let mine on while i was off checking on my mead/beer fermentation and taking some samples, come back 10-15 minutes later and the coals were already like 3/4 the size and shrinking fast. no longer welcome
why don't you just light them on the stove, that way you can keep the vent on and it will take away most of the awful smell when first lighting up.

My quicklights last longer than that (except maybe the Exotica "cubes", which are really good, but seem to go awfully fast).

It was on the BBQ and it was full sun out so hard to see the red- more importantly though only two got started well and we left 'em all on until the third was going good. I bought the coil today though and will try again tonight.
Sahara Smoke Co
The portable $10 stovetops are definitely the way to go with naturals. Compressed coconut coals usually take about 10 minutes on a high setting, you usually only need to flip them twice to get them fully lit.
