chinamon
i tried them on tuesday... they are okay but they tend to burn a little too hot for my liking. i still like CH coals more.and they do a bit longer to get started.edit: i found that two af coals to be a little too hot for AF tobacco but two CH coals were perfect. mitchard
I like them more than I liked coconaras. I wish I would have had some to throw into that test to give a better comparison.I felt like they burned at a lower temp than the ch nats. Two on a small phunnel of Tangiers works great, while two of the ch nats gets harsh easier and more often. Heat management was much easier with the AF coals. I don't think my bowl is one of the tiny smalls either. I doesn't make sense to me either. Hah.Sometimes people forget that heat exchange is a very fluid issue. More or less humidity in the air will effect heat, as will wetness of the tobacco, ambiant air temperature, the particular bowl, etc. I never, ever have to ash CH coals on a funnel. Never even turn them over - and that's unheard of, but in my particular environment that's the way it works. If I smoked in a different location, I'm sure it would be different. I think that's part of why we get so many varied results among us. We're all over the place and so are the environments we smoke in.'Rani
mustang_steve
I think coal choice also has to do with foil patterns and how one loads the bowl....if you pack it, if you go loose, if you load to the foil, give it space, etc etc. That said, I like the Ch instas better than the regular Ch coals...there's no grit that falls off the coal, which means less chance of foil hole blockage...I also think they burn a little cooler.
