JDHarding
I've been packing my phunnel down tightly lately, thinking that's the way it should be done. I saw Hookah John's vid of doing it, and he got the idea from Eric at Tangiers, so I thought this is the way to do it. But today I simply picked up the shisha with my fingers, placed it in the phunnel just like it was so that it was above the rim, then lightly packed it down till it was below the rim. It's smoking beautifully. I got 3 coco naras on it and it hasn't been harsh or anything. The flavor is amazing. It's Tang Lucid Blue Gumball, and even though the flavor is usually mild, this is STRONG flavored. Have I been doing it wrong this whole time? I thought packing it down lightly would get more airflow through the bed of shisha, instead of packing down tightly, which only burns the top layer (and becomes harsh easily), but nothing on the bottom ever gets cooked that way. Or perhaps Blue Gumball can take a lot more heat? I dunno. Just another of my random finds while smoking.
evilded777
Like I said elsewhere: its only wrong if it doesn't work for you!I have crappy luck with light packs. I have good luck with tight packs. The important thing is that it works for you, and you are enjoying it.

I used quite a lot still, but packed lightly with my fingertips.I also poked less holes in the foil this time. Maybe that has something to do with it. Less holes burns less shisha? I should try some different hole designs and see what works best.

LJ04
yeah, i had bought a small phunnel and wasn't getting it to smoke right. then i bought some tang, which said to pack it tight, and someone on here said to ditch my scali mod, and it smokes great now. i'm smoking some blue mist with a pretty tight pack and 3 cocos with two rows of pretty big holes, and in the 90min i've been smoking, it's never gotten harsh. each cloud is still big and tasty like the first. JDHarding
I must be packing it too tight or not tight enough or something.. it doesn't smoke like that for me when I pack it tight.
antouwan
a while ago i called up eric and we had a little talk. i can't remember how it started or whatever but we were talking about packs, and he brought up an excellent point: tobacco is a much better conductor of heat than air (aka, if you pack lightly with lots of air pockets you won't get a consistent even burn). he was exactly right, i've been packing the shit out of my nakhla in a tang bowl and the smoke has been amazing, i've been packing my AF a little lighter than the nak, but still rather dense for how i used to pack AF and the smoke is even better. conclusion: a tighter, more dense pack is the way to go(for me at least) and i'm never going back. outbreakpb
now what if, say i only have about an hour to sit down and relax can i just pack like a fraction of the shisha and still have a quality smoke?

Rani (BohoWildChild) tried the same and had good results.I should try it with my OG Melon Blend and see what happens.

JDHarding
If packing tightly in a phunnel is a good idea, what about a regular egyptian bowl? Packing tightly would be great, but then it's impossible to pull. Perhaps pack tightly, then poke holes all the way down through the shisha puck and through the bottom holes? Gotta be some way to pack a regular bowl tightly too.
Bye bye now have fun
my brother just dumps it off a fork into the bowl and it lasts really long. i tried it today that way and burnt the crap out of it on the 2nd set
JDHarding
Maybe how wet it is could also be a factor..I just packed some Nak Cherry very tightly in my phunnel and it's smoking fine. Loads of flavor. Using John's QLs 'cause of the amount of smoke I get from them. Plus they don't burn as hot as cocos, so I can use more of them.
