Another Afire Coals Review.

Recommended Posts

So I saw Charley's thread about Afire coals, http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=29867, and since I was getting low on coals I figured I'd give em a shot. I normally use bulk naturals anyhow, so I was hardly afraid they wouldn't work.

Jordanneff and myself split an 18lb bag of them 50/50 from amazon... added in a notebook or something to qualify for supersaver shipping, and it came out to $26 shipped. Around a week later they came in the mail, and we were not disappointed.

Pics below with a tad of info under each:

All the coals laid out on a table. just over 170 coals (can't say exactly because a few broken pieces were also there). The density is around the same as coconaras, and they don't crumble quite as easily. And my (coal dust covered) pants.

From left to right there's a full Afire coal, a coconara, and a quarter of an Afire coal. They're resting on the machete I used to chop 'em. All it took to break these (fairly evenly, no crumbling, disintegration or waste to speak of) was a batoning-style tap with the machete. Cut em in half, then the halves in half again.

You could use any mildly sharp instrument really, a machete is just what I always have on hand so it got used.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How they smoked:
-They take around the same time to light as coconaras, an extra 30 seconds or so because of their irregular shape... big deal.
-The 1/4 pieces lasted for about an hour, pretty nice.
-No taste
-Not much smell lighting up, lit them outside on a coil burner.
-Same heat output as coconaras

Breakdown of the cost:
Most places I found to buy these cost a little bit more, but here's the math for the deal I got at amazon... Compared to the price of coconaras (using the 5x 84-pack deal at H-S, trying to give them some sort of chance... ish.)

-$26 for ~170 full coals (equivalent 680 coconara sized coals) VS $26 for 168 coconaras.
-Afire: Just under $.038 per coal VS Coconaras $.154 per coal.
-That means they're roughly 1/4 the cost of coconaras.

Conclusion:
Aside from price, the only real mentionable difference between these and coconaras so far as hookahs go is the shape... a 1/4 cylinder instead of a cube. Woo.

You'd have to be a complete idiot not to buy these instead of coconaras, or any other coals for that matter. Nothing against naras, they are good coals... but not for the price. I've never paid for naras because of the price, I normally used bulk naturals... but I'm switching to Afires now, every bit as good as coconaras and cheaper than most other coals out there.

Happy smoking all! _sheesha2__by_Majunka_aurore.gif

pretty nice. I also use bulk natural. 40 lb bag from smart&Final comes out to about 14 bucks for me. used to pay 30 to get the same coals from my hookah bar. i remember reading somewhere that those coals you tried out were unsafe, I could be wrong, ill dig around for the thread. but if you say are they good and are still living to review them maybe ill give them a shot lol.

Gotta love em

I love how when you were taking them out of the box they just kept coming lol. Man it was almost like endless coals. I hope we don't use them all up by the end of summer.

Oh we will. I'm gonna guess that come mid july we'll need more.

Yeah, the 7lb box is $12 from amazon, the 18lb box is $25. But if you order directly through afires website the 18lb box is $30 + about $15 shipping so definitely go with amazon and make sure you add another item with free super saver shipping otherwise its $14 shipping through amazon. Still, no matter what it's a killer price for coconut coals

with all the hookah related web searches I do on a daily basis I am wonder how long till I see 18LB bags of aFires start to show up on actual hookah vendor sites.

I am giving it 3 months 2 weeks 1 day.

This is intriguing. I've yet to try coconaras but these are dirt cheap. I'm a little concerned as I've tried using those japanese coals with the silver "quick light" treatment on them and they were terrible. As of now I'm using Golden or Three Kings QLs. Are these superior?

I've decided to buy these. I'm down to my last box of exoticas so I'll need to stock up soon and since I'm used to cutting my own coals anyway......

Thanks for the reviews guys, and for the heads up on the Amazon price.

Good to know that there are other people out there who appreciate a bargain!

....So AKammenzind... with all this money your saving on Coals.... Will Love Shisha Come Back....?????

Hehe, I wish... too much legal BS to deal with unfortunately, and we've found that the way we made it the flavor doesn't last well in storage. I'm sure we'll experiment with it some more, trying to get it to last. If we succeed I'll send some your way... you know, for testing purposes. wink.gif

Wow I'm surprised anyone even remembers Love Shisha haha. We make some every now and then, usually root beer float or candy cane but I doubt it's coming back. Like AKammenzind said, there's a lot of legal bs to deal with, especially since the new tobacco taxes, and the flavor doesn't hold up exceptionally well any more than 2 weeks for some reason so who knows. I'd love for it to get back out there though and have more people try it, we just don't have the funds for it (as you can see, this is why we bought bulk coconut coals... that and they own) Edited by jordanneff
