redjako
So I finally tried lucid, maybe I can help ya out. I've only had OG, but just got 3 packs from Hookahjohn: mint, brambleberry, blue gum ball.I tried all three last night and they were ALL beautiful, plus long time smokers and virgin hookah smokers loved them.I have a medium phunnel, Mya, two hose (though I still prefer a purge for tangiers in general).Almost hot water / warm (this makes a HUGE difference I believe, though lucid it may not matter, I just treat it like OG in many aspects).I pack it with a fork, and compress it down TO the rim, I don't overpack it like OG over the rim: Fork it in till its above the rim, then compress it with the fork down TO the rim..its nice and packed. I make sure thats semi uniform.Foil heavy duty:Toothpick holes all over the place (including the center) all the way down (so they are fairly large holes).I finally started using Golden Japanese coals (these are great for tangiers), but have had success with exotica's and coco's.Golden Japanese: start out with FOUR coals. All hanging off the edge. It will be good for ~10-25 min, depending on how I packed it, and I'll eventually end up with THREE coals more towards the center. Smoke / flavor for 2 hours.Switched out bowls, and ended up smoking about 6 hours last night all three flavors.Used the same exact method each time. For some coal reference: all medium phunnel (and OG tangiers, which I just pack MORE then lucid OVER the bowl)Exoticas: I split them into 1" pieces, and use an entire stick minus 1- 1" piece to start, and slowly LET OFF coals.Coco Nara's: FOUR coco's to start, then 5 minutes later its hot enough, and I stand EVERY coal on its sides, then slowly take them off if I need too.I like to start the bowl with tons of heat (as slowly adding heat NEVER worked for me with tangiers), and remove heat as needed.Let us know.EDIT: I haven't had johns QL Chronic hookah coals, but many people on here say they are HOTTER then Coco's, and coco nara's are damn hot.If I was using them, I'd only use 2-3 to start, and all on their Edges (rather then flat), and diffuse the heat more.If thats too much, take off a coal and use a windcover. If thats too much, leave off the windcover. etc. Edited April 26, 2009 by redjako
clickhea
from my experience you are over packing it too much(wasting tobacco), have you tried just sprinkling it in the bowl the way it comes out of your mixed tub
fcbayern
OK so i tried again (4th Try) My results were basically.. with 1 coal split in 1/2 I got little flavor and clouds that were more or less.. With 1.5 coals (3 halves) I got a burned taste and tingle better clouds.. So I'm not sure what else to do.. This is definately not what I expected.. Everyone says Tang has awesome flavor and huge clouds but I dont see it.I video taped my session and posted it,, Sorry its in 3 parts but the whole thing is about 13 minutes.. Could you guys check it out and let me know what your suggestions are.. evilded777
I wish I had some help for you... but I have the same issue with OG Horchata, and ONLY with that flavor. Its weird.I smoke anything else Tangiers, and I might have a little heat issue here or there, but its smooth for the most part. Horchata just gets the best of me so far.Doesn't make sense to me. inino
Well as stated by me and and maybe 4 other people, (dont know if you read all the posts...) press down with the foil, not with your palm, your palm will absord some of the juice from the top of the bowl and the top gets burned quicker. you dont pack enough either. even though its lucid, still pack it like normal tangiers. nice and full. gentz
That is very little smoke, does seem to be heat related though and how you pack. Try packing it with a regular eqyptian bowl.
Hobbs
I've been smoking pretty much just Lucid (and Noir on/off) since my AF reserves depleted and I haven't touched my Nakhla in a few weeks, and here's what works for me.I use 3 CH Natural coals, I put them on their sides after they are lit and they stay on their sides for about 30-45 mins, then after they've dwindled down to about 2/3's - 1/2 of their original size, I don't worry about putting them on their sides anymore. (won't stay up anyway, too small) I don't have a particular rotation that I use, I just move them 60 degrees (roughly ) to a position that they previously weren't, about 3-5 times per round of coals. Sometimes though I forget and never move the 1st round and it still smokes good for about 45 mins, then you can tell it's time to rotate.I did just buy a scale so I can get you a measurement of how much shisha I'm using if you really need.. but I just eyeball the amount since I know exactly what works for me, which turns out to be moderately packed, not very light like AF, but not as much as Noir... some sort of happy medium.I poke 3 circles of holes, no more than 1/4" spacing between holes for the most part, sometimes I poke all the way to the bottom.. sometimes I don't, so far with Lucid it doesn't really seem to make a difference. I also do press down on the foil with the palm of my hand, then pull the foil taught again and poke holes til my hearts content.I use 1 layer of HD Au Foil, room temp or warm water.. and for the last month I've been using my KM pretty much exclusively. Also a small phunnel, grand hose.. all that stuff.I've also never had to really acclimate any Lucid flavors I've owned, I don't know if this is luck or what but I buy all my stuff from HJ. Noir though I do have to acclimate.Hope you can get some sort of helpful information out of that.. but if not, I'll take another stab at troubleshooting. Good luck with your Horchata, and mix it with cocoa.
Arcane
not sure if it's going to help, but when you poke your holes...push the toothpick to the bottom of the bowl...actually, i'll try and make a video for how i pack my tangiers...it's kinda sloppy, reckless and probably way off protocol...but it works for me Edited May 6, 2009 by arcane

fcbayern
SAw it Arcane,, I will have to try bigger holes on my next go around.. I'm soo confused,, that is how i opened my first set of holes (first pic in thread) people told mr the holes were too big.. So i opened smaller ones,, now people tell me they are too small..I got a tip from a VIP to open the holes with a Fork.. I'm gonna try that next time with 3 half pieces of coal, and a bit tighter pack.. I hope i got enough shisha for that 1 last bowl.5 bowls from a 250 gram pack, DAMN..
