fcbayern
So I was thinking about coal consumption, and was wondering if it was better to break coals in halves or hang them off the edge like a lot of people do. Since the whole coals tend to last longer. But when u break them up you get twice as many.. I'm going to calculate how many coals I go through in an average hour of smoking. Probably by keeping some sort of log. I figure once I have this I can compare different coals and their costs..I was wondering if anyone does this? Would it be crazy to like develope a speadsheet for this? Yeah that would be too much huh..LOL
jeremyk
sounds like a good i dont think using spreadsheet would be that hard you would just have to come up with some sort of formula to calculate your results but spreadsheet does have alot of auto function pre-programed into to id say give it a try though
Thermo
With QL's, I break them in half, and put three 'halves' up - or 1.5 coals. This usu lasts about 40 minutes. It follows through the magic of math that if 1.5 coals lasts 2/3 of an hour, my CPH should be about 2.25.
Bye bye now have fun
the higher the surface area to volume ratio the faster they will burn
inino
keep in mind that chinese phunnels use more coals. it also depends on the person, my cousin can burn a bowl out in a couple hours, i can make it last all day.
liquidglass
You also need to keep in mind WHERE they are being smoked. Exoticas outdoors will last me 30 min or so. Indoors depending on the quality box I get, they can go 30-1hr. (The wind factor)
delSol_si
I would modify it to coals per gram of shisha. If I pack a light bowl of 15-20g, I will need far less coals than if I pack a good 30-35g. Then again, I barely ever finish a bowl. I usually just smoke till the coals run out and then quit. I always have a bit of unsmoked shisha in the bottom of the bowl. Plus, if puff every 30 seconds, the coals will not last as long as if I puff every 3 minutes. Also depends on how big of a hit you take. Dunno, maybe per hour is better. Whatever floats your boat. smoke eater
Yeah, gee, that's one thing about hookah smoking, the coals. They go fast and they cost money! Although the cost is not that much, I find myself worrying about them. I mean the per piece cost is small, but you have to pull the trigger on a significant amount when buying any quantity, plus shipping. I tried breaking the exoticas into 6, then 5, now 4 pieces. I prefer broken to 4, because they do last longer when large, but they get used up any way. I was thinking if I cut them into 5 pieces, I'd get 20% more time, but it doesn't work out that way. I'm so cheap, if I do cut a session short, I'll douse the coals and re-use them. I'm looking forward to trying the Afires, and maybe some other naturals ie bbq naturals. It would be nice to go ahead and cook up a bowl of coals, to have on hand for the next round, and not have to worry about cost, lighting up, and all that. *HOT&SMOKING*
This sounds like quite a fun idea...However, you have to keep certain variables constant...-H&S

Found out I was paying like $0.26 per 3K and like $0.12 for the CH instant lights if I remember correctly. At the time 3K's cost me $2.50+tax for a roll of 10, but I recently found a place selling them for $2.00+tax. Don't care though, ever since I started on the CH coals (natural instant light) I can't go back to 3K, they taste like shit now. The 3K's seem to last longer and I don't seem to need as many on the bowl because they seem to burn hotter, but at half the price per coal and the non-shit taste, I will stick with CH. I would like to try cocos, but I am too impatient and live in a dorm room.
Cybersist
Cocos usually last around here for two weeks. Just to round up ill say I smoke once a day. On average I just 5 coals for a session, give or take depending on longevity, people, etc. Doing some math, I'd say that I smoke on average 16 bowls every two weeks. As far as tobacco, 750g lasts two weeks... so 45g bowls...As for CPH, i dunno lol
fcbayern
Alright guys,, So I plan on doing this.. I will make a simple spread sheet on excel with just a simple calculation for how long the session was and how much coal I used.. I will keep track every session and input the info.. I'll also have a place (obviously) on type and brand of coal.. If it works out I will post the results..For those computer gurus out there,, I belong to another forum for Hybrid cars, there is a database on that site where the members post their mileage and gallons of fuel used per fill up.. The database calculates the Mpg and gives a bunch of other pretty cool information.. Maybe if enough people are interested we could do something like that here.. (if its ok with the Mod's,,Love ya Mush )I will get started on this as soon as I get this whole tangiers problem figured out.. I can only handle 1 problem at a time..
