How Do You Get Your Multi Hour Sessions Out Of Your Phunnel Bowl?

Recommended Posts

I guess Ill use my exotica japs more often although I hate using them because they ash like crazy and I just generally hate using them because of the silver (and I smoke inside) so the silver and blowing the silver shit off gets all over the place.

Oh and they also last about 10-20 min Edited by newjacksm

On my second round (after an hour before) of coals, golden japanese, with some Brambleberry (spell?) Lucid.

Fork method, then packed to slightly below the rim, warm water.

Four coals still, these things don't burn too much.

Stuie, can you do a vid of your packing and coals starting position?

^^^^that is a set up vid i made for those aFire coals but this is how i smoke every day and i get 2 and a half hours this way with almost no heat management.

I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but you are absolutely horrible with a video camera. I couldn't hear much of anything besides a very annoying static sound and "hookah protection system." I would suggest holding the camera steady and holding it on what you are doing rather than bouncing it around at the wall and other places. Also better lighting would help. Got a bit dizzy watching it. I am seriously not trying to sound like a jerk or anything, I really do appreciate you going through the trouble of making the vid and everything, truly nice of you. I am meaning this all as constructive criticism for your future vids smile.gif . I am also in about the same spot at Stuie, used to be able to get great session, but lately I have pretty well fucked every one of them up. Getting way too much coal taste, so again, I do appreciate your input. I think I am to the point where I may want to just "forget everything I know" and start over. Or just experiment a bunch.

Stuie- one thing I did notice one time was I made my own scalli shisha saver + scalli mod-in-one for my phunnel bowl. Made a thread about it and got A LOT of criticism for it, but I tried it out and it really worked well. I was smoking a crappy flavor because it was all I had, but it was a very strong crappy flavor. I am going to try it again with a good flavor and see if it works. You might want to try it as well. Don't know if it would actually work with Tangier baccy though, never tried it.

Since I have been smoking out of my phunnel more often and my friends getting used to the buzz with nak, we have been doing multi round sessions and i have noticed i get a somewhat burned taste on the second round, but even after 2 full rounds about 1/3 of the tobacco is still good in my mini (this is with mizo)

So from the advice of Eric it seems like it needs to be packed even more ... I pack my phunnel pretty tight ... i'll see if i can stuff more in there and report back.

Try to imagine the size of the charcoal. Realizing that a charcoal that is X size puts out more than half as much heat as a charcoal that is sized 2X. Arrange the coals to keep the relative size balanced, so that the heat flux is approximately equal.

i think you guys might be expecting that the not-new bowl will have as good of a flavor as a brand new, fresh bowl? that obviously isn't the case. the tobacco is still very good and smoke-able, but it won't be as good as a freshly packed head...

If i remember my personal record, which its been a while, it was 12hrs or something like that on a single bowl. Granted that was me smoking by myself, taking hits every minute or two, but still. Longest group session was pushing 6hrs.

I use the same method a few of us came up with back when the bowl first came out. I poke a hole in the center of the foil through the middle, then in a triangular shape poke wholes out to the edge, making the edge wholes spaced out enough to be the size of the coal. I used 2 33mm 3k ql coals, one flat the other propped up on the edge of the first. I then smoke until that section starts to burn, then just rotate the foil to move the triangle to a new section of tobacco. About midway through i pop the foil off and remove the top layer of burnt baccy and mix up the unburnt, and start again.

I only used a homemade Scalli mod one time, and i did get a more even burn and more smoke. It didn't last as long as usual, but was a better smoke all together IMO.

But thats just me biggrin.gif Oh and i couldn't tell you what size my bowls are. Got my first ones from Sonthert directly, and the other two... yea biggrin.gif

Last night I had a good 4-5 session.

The setup:

Mya Gelato w/ medium Tangiers Phunnel
SB Blue Mist, placed over the brim just slightly, no sprinkling, pushed down with foil
2 Starlight CoCo Coals and then two more every ~40 minutes

Flavor was pretty strong for about 4 hours then when a little smoky. Good clouds for the duration of the smoke.

Hope that helps.

I have the same problem when I'm adding a new set of coals to my phunnel bowl, and the solution I have is rather simplistic and still wasteful, but suits my purposes:

2 coconara coals (or AF/3k/etc) on any size phunnel, mini to large. Very generally speaking, the difference between the bowl size only really regulates how quickly you have to rotate the coals, and when I'll use a windcover to get more heat.

Usually off the first set of coals I'll only rotate them once when its required, and I'll usually rotate them 1/3 of the way around the bowl. When I feel the coals need to be rotated again, they'll already be down below 1/4 their original size and ready to be replaced... so I'll just fire up a new set, and put them 1/3 of the way around the bowl on the portion that hasn't been touched yet, thus avoiding that ash taste. From there you can continue to rotate them around until they go out, but throwing on a new set will be way too hot and will give the ash taste anyways, so with this method you're still limited to 2 sets of coals (about a 2-2.5 hour session, with good use of a windcover). By that point I'm ready for a new flavor anyways, so even if the bowl has enough in it to last another 2 hours I'd rather be wasteful and pack something new.

The ash taste only comes when you're adding a hotter heat source to a portion of the bowl that has already been burned through. There's always the option of peeling the foil back and giving it a little mix, getting the fresh shisha to the top, but if I'm going to do that much I'd rather just pack a new bowl.

hmmm very good point you bring up there. so on a brand new bowl i use 2 cocos cracked in half ... so maybe if i used 1.5 cocos cracked in half i wouldn't get the burned taste.

i'm gonna have to try this the next time i have a bunch of people over ...

never really thought about using less heat on the second round ... but it obviously makes sense ... ... now i feel like an idiot!
