Sonthert
Not vortex, "sputtering" fluid flow.
ryno
I was wondering when they got short haha! I have an old small phunnel with a chunk missing, and its taller and deeper than my medium. I personally miss the tall, deep bowls. For the windcover, this is what I use and its never failed me yet
fineout
well wouldnt the roughness of the wall affect its Reyold's number (and therefore entrance length to become laminar and/or fully developed) and so if you made them smooth inside you could make the neck shorter? delSol_si
I like my phunnel being tall. I actually wouldn't mind it being even taller than it is (tho it is fine where it is). When I take my bowl off to go repack or clean, I like having the long stem on the bowl so I don't burn the fuck out of my hand (the heat from the coals usually doesn't make it all the way down to the bottom of the stem). I usually get a wet paper towel and wipe out the funnel while holding the cool base (can get hot with a windcover so take that off for a bit before changing the shisha) and it's quick and easy, and best of all it gets smoking even faster on the next bowl since you've got a warmed up bowl. That's my experience anyways.-Z

The thermal conductivity of this clay is pretty good...wait a minute! You know something...A little bit, i mostly am concerned with incompressible fluids but im pretty sure that the roughness of the interior would have to do with the length you would need, the material could stay the same you would just have to glaze the inside..or would that mess with the thermal properties as well? Sonthert
No, it wouldn't, but its significantly tougher to glaze in side and get it consistent, hence making it more expensive. A lot. It could be done, but to what end? Double the cost of the bowl for something that can be designed out? I think taller bowls match hookahs better. The smaller bowl doesn't look right. The biggest problem is the "cliff" on the other side of the taper, it creates little back eddies of fluid flow. SWe've almost eliminated them, making the problem almost non-existent...but they're still tall, because thats what a Tangiers bowl looks like. There are still added benefits of being taller. Its easier to grip and carry and the length makes it so the bottom of the bowl stay cooler, s you can remove it or put it back on with coal on. Originally, from our old method of making holes, it was for fluid flow and aesthetics primarily, in that order.
fineout
i agree that i like it higher as well, i wasnt saying that you should change it..i was just saying you could get the same effect.

I still don't understand the technical reason behind it... but I'll believe you anyway. Its really nice being able to grab the bowl by the bottom. My phunnels are the tallest bowls that I have, it makes then unique and I like them more because of that.

hookah hippie
I never saw that windcover just ordered one nice and easy to use no more stacking things to make it tall
