Stuie
After reading Cotsi's thread on the hoses he is making. What is the optimal hose diameter?Things you have to consider:Hole(s) in bowlDiameter of stem (ID)Diameter of hose port (ID)At what point is too big?(Hypothetical) Like if i am smoking a MZ getting .5 stem ID Diameter. I am smoking out of a Small Phunnel. And smoking out of moded 3/4 inch moded garden hose. I am pulling in more air than smoke. So in my opinion... OVERKILL!So this is just a random thought...discuss. chinamon
i think 0.5" i.d. is perfect.
inino
Km ultimates and supremes are what I use and I love the pull compared to a mya hose or any other hose. I think the wider the better, but it probably just comes down to preference rather than optimizing. I really never noticed a problem with pulling air though whether I use a wide gauge or a thin gauge.

Bookworm
I'm a huge fan of the wide diameter hoses. I definitely notice an easier pull and better clouds with my KM than my stock MZ hose.
Scalliwag
Whatever the most restrictive point in the entire system is what really determines whatever optimal can be is how that is "supposed" to work. But I can tell a difference smoking through a larger ID hose on a QT and I know the hose port is more restrictive than even my smallest hose. Short answer is I have not effin clue I've not smoked from any larger than a 1/2" ID and I'm still trying to figure out how it works better on a QT. It makes me feel like a real dumbass. Voski
The stem would be the biggest factor so it would be different for different hookahs. If a stem has a bad draw throwing a wide hose on it isn't going to make a difference. Go as wide as you want I don't see how you could ever be sucking air in or maybe it just doesn't make sense to me. Since all the air going through the hose has to come from the bowl and since your creating smoke when you suck there should always be smoke. ColibriDon
7/8" is the diameter of my "AS" KM hose and it's the perfect pull. So, that.
cotsi95
Just because where the tip goes in is 7/8 doesnt mean the hose is 7/8 lol. I personally think that .5 ID hose is as big as you want to go. Espically if you have a tip that has a .5 hole in it. They flow almost too much at that point you lose a lot of your velocity.
ilikemyusername
man, i;m too drunk to make a reply but let me say 30 inces of .1 inch is harder to pull through than .5 inch of .1 because of restriction from surface area. if i feel like it i'll explain later, but a 1 inch id hose would ot be and better or worese than anything else, the bigger the hose the easier the pull, the hose diameter is not going to make you pull more "air" it all comes from your jar. think about it. chromecarz00
.5 inches for sure. I've built a couple hoses in diff diameters and thats the best blend of easy pull and smoke volume.
