I decided to go with a metal screen over foil recently and am convinced it's the way to go. Granted, I've been smoking only nakhla recently but seriously, it's a world of difference. I barely notice any drag on my KM with an egyptian bowl and a screen and the smoke, with regards to volume and harshness, is easier to manage. woo for screens!

I have been smoking nakhla only recently as my phunnel is ~200 miles away but this hassel-free approach is making life easier.

anybody else a fan?

I like how I can define exactly what goes on with my foil, but the trade-off with a screen is satisfactory. Nak doesn't take careful heat management or specific packing technique, so the ease of using a metal screen is enough to convince me to use it. I haven't messed around with it and Tangiers, though I suspect it won't be pleasant, but with Nak it's simple and quick - yielding good results.

What do you mean by with experience, codename? I have plenty of smoking experience under my belt - I just never bothered using a metal screen before.

It seems to me that you are in favor of screens because of the reduced drag. There's another way of getting around that with foil + egyptian bowl.

1) Pack shisha normally in the bowl
2) 2 layers of foil. Leave a slight spacer so the foil isn't touching the shisha.
3) Using a long narrow stick, make 1-3 holes all the way through the tobacco to a hole on the bottom of the bowl.
4) Using a thumb tack, place as many small holes on the foil as you can. ~1 mm between holes.

I've used this technique whenever I'm forced to use a non-phunnel bowl, and it has worked great for me. The key is getting massive airflow through the bowl.

Agreed, a screen never works out like foil.

The two biggest problems with a screen are 1) holes are normally too large and the shisha burns easier 2) they aren't airtight

I'd put my foil skills up to any screen any day, so far none have beat them.

2 layers of foil is a waste.

I dont like screens because it takes longer to heat the shisha as it takes longer to heat the screen. On top of that they are a pain to clean. And I use 2 layers of foil because I feel that 1 layer is too thin and i have ripped my foil before when only using one layer. If the foili is heavy duty one layer is plenty.

+1

What is the point supposed to be of people using two pieces of foil?

You're right. 1 layer is fine in most cases, but I find for people that are just starting, putting 2 layers helps to avoid burning the shisha right away. It makes it take a bit longer to get going and disperses the heat a bit better. To each their own though.

I like foil. It doesn't get dirty, since you throw it away. No chance of transient flavors in any degree. It doesn't rust. If you lose one, you're not like "Shit now I need a new one and they charge $2 for a $.10 item."

Metal screens are what I started on due to friends and the local lounges, but they really only last like 20 minutes. The screen overheats and chars the tobacco at 30 min maximum.

BUT, if it works for you, go for it smile.gif

I would have to try foil some more, it makes the four-hour sessions, especially with parties, its beautiful. Having friends over and charred shisha 30 minutes later is a pain in the ass.

I have only used a screen with my hemi bowl because it came with it and I had to do a review on it. The screen was thicker then other ones I had seen but it still got tobacco stuck to it and it got dirty. I did like how I could rotate the screen on the bowl and it would stir the tobacco around since it was stuck to the screen.

Oh and it was fantastic when it sliced my thumb when I was trying to clean it.

It did smoke good though.

I use foil for wrapping any other head, but when it comes to an effortless shisha to prep like nak I like using the screen. It's like the icing on the easy-bake cake - just one sweet addition to something that's impossible to fuck up.

That being said, the reason I'm sold on it is because I don't notice any differences between using a screen and poking holes well in foil on an egyptian head loaded with nak. It's only natural in that scenario to expend the least amount of effort. If it were some other shisha that required a little more TLC I probly wouldn't go with the screen, but in this situation I don't see myself turning back.

With regard to the over-heated screen scenario, it has happened a little. Not enough to char and burn the tobacco (and I havn't had it stick yet), but I can feel it peak when the coals are stoked and they have been on the head for a while. It has never been enough to make me cough and gag, but I understand how it could be unpleasant to a more casual smoker. I've had the same happen with foil, it just seems a little easier to accomplish with the screen.

sorry, missed the edit window
