Smoking Shisha In A Rented Room...

Recommended Posts

Hey,
Alright I've got a question...I just moved into a subletted apartment bedroom due to my internship being in a different city than my home. So basically I have this room to myself, and the rest of the apartment is shared with a few other tenants. I was wondering how smoking shisha indoors in a place like this affects the overall smell (/look?) of the place. Most of the room is carpetted, with tiles near the entrance. There's a window where hopefully most of the smoke can quickly exit. Basically I've smoked at my place at home indoors but not sure if I should do it here since it's a rented place. With smoking cigarettes, the smell of the smoke can affect the place completely as it doesn't just go away. Is it similar with shisha? I've noticed when smoking at home, my room does smell a bit fruity for quite a while (a day tops) but the smell basically disappears and it smells just like normal afterwards. Am I right, or is it just that my nose grew used to the smell? And yeah, I haven't smoked a LOT indoors at home, so I don't know if smoking a lot would make a difference as I will probably smoke more here.

Overall - is there any way for the owner of the place or others to be able to tell shisha was smoked in here without being in my room when I smoke it?

Anyways, if you guys have any input, please let me know! Thanks in advance!

Cheers.

The smell doesn't linger like cigarettes, however they will be able to tell you smoked if you get coal burns on your carpet. (Which is highly likely to happen) I suggest you buy a cheap large area rug for your hookah smoking area to prevent burning the carpet. You should be fine then.

Me and my roommate smoke about 3 times a day indoors. The smell is gone within a few hours. Landlord doesn't notice it. I should note that we don't have carpets however, just laminate.

I've smoked in a carpeted room lots before, and didn't have an issue.

I smoke in my rented room with the window cracked and the bathroom vent on, not sure if it does anything but it makes me feel better. Sometimes on really hot/cold days I don't even crack the window. The smoke/coal smell does linger for a few hours but it usually goes away. I usually spray some of the febreezeair effects stuff around the room/bathroom before the owners come over anyways and that always works. I wouldn't worry about it.

Wow. Thanks for the quick replies guys...looks like I'll be able to have a nice session here without having to go outside. I have carpet at home too, and yes, I did drop a coal once onto the paper I kept under the hookah, but was able to get to it before it can do any real damage (plus...I'm lucky it was dark dark dark brown carpet lol)

Anyways, any suggestions for what type of mat/rug/etc.. I should get? I'd like something cheap but that'll do the job...and of course better than just putting paper under it since that's pretty useless. I'm heading down to Canadian Tire (big hardware/car parts store) in a bit to pick up some other supplies so hopefully I can find it there?

Oh, and yeah, the other people are pretty chill so they wouldn't mind...plus I don't normally smoke until the evening when everyone is pretty much out or in their own rooms minding their own business (our living room is totally unfurnished atm and nobody really chills there lol)

Thanks again.

Edit: just saw your reply fsu...yeah, I forgot my febreeze at home but I've got a ton of axe if needed lol...and I'll grab some febreeze later too. And yeah don't think the window should really be a problem keeping open at least until winter comes around again...and even when it's chilly...I like to keep my window open during a session since like you said...just makes me feel a bit better...but I'll definitely try the bathroom fan idea...since yeah, we've got our own bathrooms too.. I smoke in doors all the time. The smell never lingers long, but even when I have friends come over soon after, I do get quetions like...
" what air freshener do use? it smells sweet in here"

So they would never know if I did not tell them. smile.gif

i would rather get a piece of wood (plywood or something like that) to put under the hookah because that will give the base something hard, flat and sturdy to stand on. or maybe a cheap rug under the plywood just in case a coal drops.

I use a QT base bambino stem so it's small enough to put on my computer desk, but if you want, get one of those plastic computer chair thingys that make it roll around easier, they won't burn unless you let the coalsit on it for like 2 min lol. Thats what I use.

Smell is never a problem while smoking. Lighting the coal will let off some smell. Tell your housemates about it and if they don't know about Hookah, educate them about it. Just ask and see if they are at all uncomfortable, I'm sure they will understand and shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Not a problem in my experience, I've signed sublet contracts stating that there would be no smoking inside and the landlord never complained even though she knew I smoke my hookah indoors. Just make sure it's ok with the other tenants.

I don't smoke in my house out of respect for my roommates. They don't really like smoking so I haven't even asked them about it. However I smoke inside my friends house all the time. His parents are retired and travel around the country so they are only here like 2-3 times a year (they rent the other room out and their son lives for free in one of them while he is going to school). We put all the hookah stuff away (although they are pretty cool so we probably don't have to) when they come and they've never said anything about the smell in the house. You can quite obviously smell it when you are actively smoking but within 20-30 mins I've had plently of people show up and ask to fire up a bowl even though i just finished, they can never tell.

I live in a small one bedroom apartment and the smell of shisha (not burnt) is very strong in here, but the smell of smoke goes away almost immediately...

do you mean the smell of fresh, unused shisha (in tubs) is strong?

those boards that you buy that are about 1/4" thick that you use for middle school science projects are good at not burning when the coal drops on it. you can buy 9 of those and tape them together on the bottom to use for a mat

My boyfriend and I don't have any problems smoking inside while renting. We just make sure we have a towel down so we don't ruin our rug. Another good thing that Chrome pointed out is an air purifier. A nice investment for us.

Get a cheap air purifer, the coal lighting smell will be no more if lit next to it...

will the air purifier help with neutralizing the shisha smoke or is it mainly for the coals?

Hey guys,
Thanks again for all the replies. I guess I will probably pick up an air purifier...or just bring the one that I've got @ home since I bought it and don't even remember opening the box :|

Anyways, I ended up going to canadian tire to grab some supplies, and found one of those outdoor mat/rugs that you put outside of your door, and it was on clearance for $4 so I grabbed one. Didn't look too nice but I don't plan on using it for decoration so blah. (off topic, but while I was there they also had a special on a 46 pack of snap-top containers for $9.99 (regular 24.99). All sizes come in it, a bunch of ~100mL (which I compare to about 100g of shisha, but I might be wrong?) and a bunch of 300, 500, 1L...and one 17L :| lol.)

On my way home however, I found a bunch of nice clean wood which looks like it was from a desk or shelf of some type. The wood was nice and clean and put in a pile on the corner of someone's driveway. I found a nice size slab, about 2ft x 2ft (0.66m x 0.66m) and cleaned it with some all purpose spray when I got home. I kept my hookah on that and it worked great biggrin.gif ...I may actually return the $4 rug haha.

However, when lighting the coals, I go near the window, and I ended up getting a small bit of lit ash fall on the carpet and it was still burning orange for a bit, but didn't really do anything major, and can't be seen (or felt since I threw water on it and scrubbed) since it's on darkish carpet.

I'll probably consider telling one of the other people in my apartment since I'm sure he knows about shisha since he's middle eastern, and it's pretty likely he does it too lol.

Thanks again guys!

Neutralizes the air. It also helps with car hair. (Irrelevant, I know, but AWESOME if you're a cat owner.)

The "Smoker" smell is actually tar that's adhered itself to the walls and stuff in the room.

Hookah tobacco has practically no tar to adhere to surfaces...what little tar there is, does get filtered out by the water. Therefore, no smoker smell.

You'll have coal smell and the smell of your shisha of choice linger for a bit after smoking however...but no "smoker" smell.
