Problem fixed.

A note on exoticas:

The last batch I bought was terrible...they lasted about 20 minutes with a wind cover and crumbled all over the place. I'm officially done with exoticas, but I'm pretty damn excited to receive 200 shishacos for only 20 bucks biggrin.gif

Oh and btw, the discount code given on this sight for thehookah isn't active anymore...not sure if anyone is aware of that.

Cheers

I'm not going to do a review of these yet, but I will say this:

1st round of coals, the coal was half black (out) in 10 minutes. I flipped it, and it lit back up and went fine. Lasted just as long as a Coco.

2nd round of coals, the coal was GLOWING white when I took it off the burner. 5 minutes on the bowl and it was COMPLETELY BLACK. Took it to the sink and blew on it as hard as I could; nothing happened. I'd like to think I got a bad batch or something... but there's no excuse for a coal going out in 5 minutes.

To help you understand how much this frustrated me, I took time out of my post-Lost season finale reading (lost-forum.com baby) to complain. I'm relighting the coal on the burner right now. I'll update this post when I can conclude anything.

I tried these shishaco coals 1 week ago and I think that they are comparable to coconaras, have not tried them side by side though

Zinite did you light the coals thoroughly? that is usually the problem when I experience any coal black out.

Here is how I do it.

Indoors (No Humidity, Texas Heat)

Put 2 Coconaras on a phunnel

20 minutes, ash and flip

20 minutes, ash and flip, add windcover

20 minutes, start new coals on stove.

10 minutes remove old embers and add new coals.

Those are rough estimates but that's what I do... and and when I take the coals off the burner there isn't a dark spot on the coal. Even with flipping it takes 10-15 minutes to light, to make that happen but I find the last longer if those bad boys are solid orange all the way around.

Stuie, after 20 minutes of the cocos sitting on 1 side, wouldn't it be out on the bottom? I don't think mine can go much more than 5 minutes, without going black, for the 1st half of the coal. The 2nd half the coals don't go out as easily..

Zinite, I have gone through a full box of these and that has never happened to me. Maybe a bad batch? Idk
But I do understand your frustration, give them a second chance hahaha and Lost Forums? never knew they existed

So I used these last night. They are really similar to cocos. I would say they put out the same amount of heat. The ash from these coals do not stick to the coal they easily fall off. They are small specks of ash like cocos. These seem to ash a little more though.

Any natural coal will do that. I can't carry an exotica, coconara, al awhel, romman coal from my burner in my kitchen to my office to smoke with out part of it going black (20 feet max). Just because it's black doesn't mean it's not putting out heat. Spending less time messing with them will keep the heat more consistent.

3rd round with these coals. I'm flipping them every 5 minutes, and they're still going black and not burning nearly as hot as they should be. Bad batch maybe? They're frustrating the hell out of me. With Cocos, I could leave them on the bowl for 20 minutes and then flip, and it would be fine. If I did that with these, they would be completely black.

I really don't think this is a user error either... I'm letting them light all the way. I've used jap coals, cocos, quick lights, hj coals, exoticas, and this has never happened to me before.

I always had probs keeping cocos lit unless almost constantly hitting on them. If I stopped a few minutes I would have to reccesitate them. Kind of annoying. The problem seems to be inherant with them.
I'm curious Stuie if you have tried breaking one up in the coal bucket? I'm out of coconaras or I would try it. It seems they would burn a bit faster but since more surface is in contact with air when they are broke this would minimize that problem.

Not yet Scalli, I have been using the HC coconut coals. They are much easier to break.

do you need to crack them in half like i do for cocos? When i use whole cocos it seems to get a bit hot, when i cracked them in half and spread them out i got much more flavor.

They are a tiny bit smaller than cocos so i am thinking i may be able to get away without cracking them.

Any advice to those who have used them?

Thanks

Broke down and ordered some Friday. Hope they arrive intact! Not much luck with thehookah.com shipping to me.

So I thought it was a big no no, to have any side not burning with the coals. I am pretty much babying my coco's all the time to keep them lit for the their first half of life. I light them, blow on them to get them red all over.. put them on, wait a few minutes (I don't hit the hookah yet during this), pick them up, and blow on them to get them red again, and rotate. Then I'll start hitting. for the first 20 minutes I'd say, I'm flipping them every 5 minutes, and blowing on them to get them red if necessary. The windcover does help to get them going again, without having to blow on them, but cocos are always very involved for me.

Got my 2 boxes last night. Popped open one and got a really good session of some Nakhla Mizo White Grape out of it.

Great coals! I am very satisfied. A great deal for the price and even better with the buy 1, get 1 free deal.

They light fast and I got about an hour out of my first round of 3 and then cycled in the windcover until the second round was ready.

The only bad thing is that they ash in this fine grain that tends to fall down into the holes really easily. If you ash frequently, this shouldn't cause a problem.

Look for a review of these in the review section! smile.gif

Tried some last night.

These bad boys ash like crazy. They were ashing from the walk from the kitchen to the hookah. Ash just falls off these things like nothing. Didn't last near as long as cocos, but i wasn't paying attention much... was watching Lost.
