Scalliwag
I read about some more woods used for tobacco pipes. Maple, Oak, Mesquite and Cherry. So I got some birdseye maple to see how that would work. I already knew how nice the wood looks. As far as color it is not far off from olivewood but its a long way off in terms of grain. I soaked it in olive oil and then dried it off because I like the way that has worked with the olivewood. I didn't get the base square but the next ones will be. I'm finishing the olivewood sticks first and using this one for a bit to check it out but I thought I'd post this. Here's a 360 vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc6v1eF0esA

I wonder if the different types of wood may add different hints of flavor to your bowls?
Scalliwag
more like a "Lazy Scalli" I used one of those rotating LCD vases they use for those crystals with the art etched in them and just sat a coaster on it

Scalliwag
I made my Shiner Shrine base out of Brazillian Cherry and like it a lot. It looks a lot like Mesquite or at least the heartwood. My buddy Travis just dropped off the last of the olivewood bowls. So I gotta take pics. I thought I kept another stick to do but he had them all. So I got a metric shitload of olivewood bowls now.
