Picking A New Cell Phone

Recommended Posts

Yea so my cell phone contract is up and thankfully I have the ability to get rid of this damn razor. Anyone have advise on picking out a new phone? The only feature I really care about is that it has a good calendar that automatically updates with my computer. (mac) I hear rumors of a new IPhone coming out this June but I'm not sure if I want to wait until what like August to get one? I'm getting off alltel and have a choice between at&t or verizon so that leaves my options pretty open.

I'd say if you have a mac and want something that easily syncs with it, the obvious choice is the iPhone. Even if you don't want the new iPhone, I'd stay wait until it is released as there may be deals on previous iPhone models.

Otherwise, Palm products usually have decent calendar programs and the new Palm Pre is getting a lot of hype, so it might be worth looking into.

In 2010 AT&T's contract with Apple is up so they might make a CDMA iPhone which would be compatible with Verizon. The only issue there is that Verizon doesn't like their phones to have wi-fi which is a major selling point of the iPhone. All of this is rumor but something to keep in mind. I personally have AT&T and use a jailbroken iPhone and I love it to death.

I havnt been following the rumors very closely, but is the IPhone 3 even worth waiting for? Also is the jailbroken scene safe? I hear it will kill the phone.

I phone is the only choice as far as im concerned. I have a 3g and love it, the new update will be just that a new update theres no reason to wait for the 4th generation iphone since there is really nothing they can add hardware wise like they did between the 1g-3g. Get an iphone you wont regret it.

^^^bingo.

The major updates Apple makes to its iPhones are firmware, not hardware. That means that even older phones get updated, for free.

The biggest update scheduled that I know about is the 3.0 firmware. People who bought their phones two years ago when they first came out can use this upgrade as well, for free, and itunes downloads and installs it for you.

If you want an iPhone at all, get an iPhone. It is a revolutionary device.

For what it's worth, mine has been hacked for 6 months with no ill effects of any sort. It took about 5 minutes to hack it.

New iphone is supposed to have a better lcd which uses less battery, it will have a compass and some other shit. Faster 3g speed capability also.

The lcd is viable, but turning the brightness down works pretty well. A GPS is a compass already, so that seems unlikely/weird. 3g speed is a function of implementation, so it would be backwards-compatible to older phones as well. The 3g spec hasn't changed, so there won't be new hardware there.

All of this is rumors, kids. Apple doesn't release specs ahead of time.

Hear the new one will have a better camera capable of video. What are yall talking about saying its all firm ware. The first Iphone didn't have 3g. If you bought the first version you still dont have 3g. IF its a phone im gonna be stuck with for 2 years I would like to at least know what is fact and what is rumor about the new one. So I guess ill end up waiting, but are Iphones really the only option out there?

Of course not -- there are lots of phones a person can buy.

I have 2 iphones -- 1 with and 1 without 3g. They're pretty much the same thing. I use 3g occasionally, and I like the GPS, but 95% of what you use the phone for they are identical. I'm not worried about new hardware obsoleting the phone, especially coming from a RAZR.

If you want to wait until the next model comes out, be my guest. There's no release date, so it's as likely to come out in June as it is to come out this time next year. No one knows.

No matter which one you buy, a newer iPhone than the one you bought will eventually come out.

Really? Personally I'd like a better camera, flash, smaller overall design, bit better battery life, and no metal trim around the screen.

My only gripes about the iPhone are AT&T (which has HORRIBLE coverage in the places I like to go) and lack of a physical keyboard.

and so far that's enough to keep me on verizon.

All that, except I couldn't care less about the metal trim. Differentiates it from an iTouch.

Honestly, I'd also like a hard button assigned to taking a picture. touching the screen ruins the framing. Obviously, this is leagues from my Nikon, but I love taking pictures and I wish the iPhone was better at it.

There's always room for improvement. As a phone and multi-function device, however, I still think it is without parallel.

This is what has kept me away from the iPhone this far. I do too much email, texting, etc.. on the go to use a touch screen. I wish I could chose my carrier so I wasn't stuck with Windows mobile, and could try the android OS out sad.gif

I really like my blackberry bold, I sync it with my calendar and contacts on google, which is what i use...
Internet is super fast, keyboard is great, cameras decent...
I suggest you go to an att and play around with the phones, see what feels right for you.

I like the iPhone, but think I'd rather stick with a blackberry and always reliable service (Vzw). They are releasing the CDMA version of the Blackberry Bold (called the Tour) in the middle of July, or so latest rumors/news say...

I'm torn between a Blackberry Bold and the Apple iPhone at the moment. Both have a lot to offer, but I think I'd had to play around with the Bold to decide if I really like it.

Any expert opinions floating around out here?

I can't enough good things about the Samsung Omnia. I was torn myself on a new phone, as I wanted one device to handle phone/gps/mp3/etc duties. I was VERY tempted by the iPhone, but in the end I could not succumb to it. First, AT&T sucks in comparison to Verizon in my area. That alone was big for me. With the phone itself, there was alot as well. There's the initial cost with contract and the data plan. It is not cheap to do. Then there are features of the phone itself to consider. Lack of video, shitty camera, no flash support for web sites, no multitasking, no tethering (its coming, but it'll cost you).

When you REALLY look at what the iPhone offers over other comparable smartphones is bling. Yes, they look great. Their interface is smooth, and reliable. But it stops there. When it came to core functionality, I can do more on my phone than an iPhone. Now, what did it take to get there? I have my phone HEAVILY optimized to do everything I want it to. So, if you are ok with tinkering, then there are other options out there. but if you want a great of box experience, the iPhone is hard to beat.
