Whats Your Hookah Set Up Procedure?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm just a bit curious what your guys' routine for setting up a hookah session? Here' my procedure:

1) Empty out old water, and clean out phunnel.
2) Place hookah stem under running cold water.
3) Place 2 coals on the stove.
4) Add ice and water to base.
5) Pack tobacco into bowl.
6) Foil bowl. Poke holes.
7) Assemble stem, base, tray and bowl.
8) Place coals on top. Smoke away.

I do all these steps on my own if I'm smoking alone, if my roommate is with me, he'll normally do #3 and #4 (we call it "ice duty")

What do you guys normally do? Do you ever break up tasks between friends (like "ice duty"?)

I dump the vase when changing flavors or every other day, so here's the procedure not counting that.

1) remove old bowl/grommet
2) clean old bolw/grommet in sink, set in rack to dry
3) grab dry bowl and grommet
4) go to living room, pack bowl on top of chest of drawers
5) foil bowl
6) punch holes
7) place bowl/grommet on hookah
8) sit down on couch
9) set coals on the single-coil burner to my left
10) wait until started
11) place coals on bowl
12) add windcover if needed
13) enjoy! smile.gif

Personally I....

1) Empty the base and put a solution or hot water in it to clean and set it aside
2) Use vinager, lemon juice, and sometimes my gun cleaning brush
3) Then I rinse the hookah stem out
4) roll up a paper towel and put it into the stem and push it through with a dowel rod to dry it and clean a bit more (does an impressive job)
5) rinse out the base, and fill up with water
6) put coals on to light
7) assemble hookah
8) clean phunnel and pack
9) Put the coals on wink.gif

That's if I'm smoking alone

If I'm with friends I have one or two I let help me and most of them consider it an honor when I do.

They do the job of

Cutting coals,
maintaining coals throughout
and occasionally I let them pack a bowl or clean my hookah (the two I trust that I've taught)

1) stand around uselessly deciding what flavor(s) to smoke
2) pull out the tub(s) of shisha that I want to use
3) Change water if I'm not feelin too lazy
4) Check for Justin or Scotty.
if Justin != here && Scotty != here
goto lightcoals();
else
goto packbowl();
5) (also known as packbowl(); )
pack bowl
6) punch holes
7) go outside
8) if coallight == 0
goto lightcoals();
9)SMOKE

When a hookah is done, I put it in the back. The next day, I clean it, rinse the bowl, empty out the water, rinse the jar and the main tube and hose port.

So, on the night,

1) Start charcoal
2) Pull tobacco
3) pack bowl
4) huck fork into sink
5) Put bowl on counter, get hookah appropriate for flavor being smoked.
6) Pull shank off of jar
7) Start water filling in jar.
8) Rinse and brush main tube while water is filling in jar.
9) Replace Shank
10) Check water level
11) Put bowl on hookah
12) Put tongs on hose port
13) Put extra coals on tray
14) Get appropriate hose.
15) pull head piece from hose
16) rinse and brush head piece
17)blow head piece dry
18)Replace headpiece
19) Check draw of hose
20) Put hose on hookah
21) Check draw of setup
22) Blow check vent
23) Charcoal should be ready by now, if not, wait until they are.
24) One by one, Flip charcoal, scrape lit end on burner to remove silver coating.
25) Place desilvered side down charcoals on bowl.
26) Test hit.
27) Maintain until bowl evens out
28) Serve

No, a good hose doesn't need to be cleaned. A three piece leather hose with a metal cased headpiece will need periodic cleaning, but it can be removed and cleaned separately.

I was using KM plain Jane three-piece leather hoses, but I swung a deal with George and refit them all with Thamesh leather hoses...seem 15% better than KMs and they're 7% cheaper.

Some of the leather hoses I replaced date back to when Indo-European was wholesaling hookah stuff...seven years old. Still never rusted. Another advantage of smoking low-water content tobacco. Your hoses don't rust.
