Tangiers Packing Video!

Well played maestro. Mastery in action. A few thoughts/things I'd do slightly differently, but really not that important.

Busting the Florida-curse myth out of the water.


We press the foil down to get that amount of divot, not because thats the right divot, but we mash the tobacco down until it "pushes back" and see how much is really in there. Once you pull the foil back, it will spring back up and touch the foil slightly. The mashing with the foil is the objective yard stick to find out how much tobacco is in the bowl. Conceivably, somebody could get the wrong idea, put a little in the bowl, and then tap it lightly to get that much divot in, but they didn't mash the tobacco down until it pushed back. If you see what I'm saying.

Why not use that fork to poke holes? Why didn't you ask for or me remember to give you oyster forks? That dinner fork is most unsightly.

I could see how people could get that idea from the foil being pushed down. But if the bowl is underpacked as you suggested, they would get really harsh smoke and probably realize that they did something wrong. haha I tried to make it as clear as possible that there was a lot of tobacco in that bowl but we'll have to see how it works out for everyone else.

I tried using the fork to poke the holes but the damn thing just pokes really long lines in the foil--the prongs just push down one entire section of the foil instead of individual holes per prong.

The reason I didn't ask was because I...well...forgot. haha I have found some online that I might have to order for cheap and then give some to Tim and one of my roommates for packing Tangiers.

Stuie, if it was really that harsh, you may have underpacked a little. Try putting a little less than you did before and that should help the problem. Although, take this advice with a grain of salt, I have yet to experiment to find out which makes it more harsh--underpacking or overpacking. I always got harsh smoke from underpacked bowls but I could have that backwards.

Bauman, if your first name is Will, I think I know you. Anyway, yes, it's fine for the coals to touch the tobacco. With Tangiers, it almost always will--if it does't, you may have done a little underpacking and it'll be harsh. My bowls always make that crackling sound but only for a minute or two and then it goes silent.

man I put 3 cocos on a small phunnel yesterday... about killed me... burning shisha, and super harsh.

and you packed the same way ColibriDon did? same holes?

although, it is weird that i notice people can pack roughly the same way and use the same coals, but get different results. i use 3 CH QLs(4 CH QLs w/ nakhla) on my small phunnel or sometimes go 4 canarys. most of the time, its good...occasionally, i'll get a harsh pull but i move a coal or two towards the perimeter and it evens out.

to the OP: great vid...i actually use that method when i'm not lazy

Identical. Maybe it didn't have enough tobacco in there for 3 cocos.

Lol I just moved out this week, but yes the bramble berry smells amazing. I was thinking like fruit roll-ups? And you can expect to meet me during warped lol.

man.. I usually use 2 coco's and cycle in a windcover vs. 3.. And even then the smoke will get harsh at times..

I think the 2 big nuggets of info here though is pushing down the foil to that level of divot, as long as the tobacco pushes back. How it gets in there is irrelevant, as long as its even.

Oh, and of course the holes everywhere, that is a must with Tangiers..

i just put 3 CH coals on a small phunnel with Lucid horchata.

At first the coals look overwhelmingly too large, but i cheat them off the edge about 1/6 then when i ash them first time move them toward normal resting position...

Yeah, Stuie...more tobacco.

There is no variance to packing tobacco in there, you can;t adjust the amount of tobacco. There is a correct range of the amount of tobacco in the bowl, you can't deviate from that without consequences. That amount is dependent on the size of the bowl.

I've been at this a few years, but I'm new to phunnels. Turns out I've been way off base, preparing them more like an egyptian bowl.

I made my wife watch your video and pack me a bowl (it was our anniversary), and MAN! that thing smoked like a champ. Med. fake-ass Chinese phunnel, 3 cocos, blissful.

Glad I've finally gotten schooled. Now I know what these things are supposed to taste like. It was good before, but it's far beyond good now.

Im a tangiers virgin and thanks to these forums decided to try some out and I really dont want my first experience to be disappointing but I cant wait for my new Phunnel to get in before I smoke some!

Any suggstions anyone??

This method is similar to how I pack my lucid, I just pack it to the rim down with the fork.

For OG, I let it "fluff" (sonthert says Sponge, which I like as a term) to above the rim (so I'm packing more then Eric, I'll need to try just getting it to the rim).

Then 3 coco's or 4 Golden Japanese...perfecto.

Give this a try you people with problems and tangiers.

2-4 threads will come up, but you pack it similar, clear out the middle more for airflow...and LESS heat then a phunnel.

I've always had some epic fails (past 15 min of smoking) with egyptian, only had a mild amount of success with a Mya. The threads in the search function have better descriptions though.

Just posted my Tangiers Packing video to Youtube--I'm hoping this will get some people some good results from Tangiers and give them another technique to try out.

I made a different thread so that this could be easily found using the search function, not just to get more posts.

Just make sure you acclimate it in the same environment you smoke it in and you'll be fine.

Since learning this from Eric, Tangiers has become my daily smoke. haha

I am going to try your method tonight, I usually pack it with my hands and I get good results, but the way you were able to get the baccy into the rim with that fork looks easy! I usually have to spend several minutes trying to get it to stay in the bowl instead of popping out over the edge. Now, grape, choco-mint, or green apple candy? I think I have some passionfruit as well... I can't decide, I'll close my eyes and grab one. Thanks for the vid, I'll let you know my results tonight when I get it going.
