mohinder
I bought a pipe a while back, as far as I know it's just a generic Egyptian. But recently I've started noticing it looks a lot like an MZ. I've poked around a bit and it appears to be the same as a 'pharoah' according to the MZ website. I'm assuming it's just a copy, and I'm not really bothered either way (it smokes just great, bit shonky on the build quality though). Is there any way I can tell? It has no stamps, no marks, no wording on it at all, do MZs have stamped trays or a stamp on them anywhere? The pictures I've seen of MZs, the hose ports and so on look a lot cleaner and .... nicer than this one, so I'm fairly sure it's a knock off, but it'd be nice to know.Cheers
r1v3th3ad
yes, there is a stamp on the tray that looks like an old fashioned globe...if you find a stamp on it, I'll take a pic of mine and put it up for comparison...do you have any pics of the pipe? mohinder
QUOTE (r1v3th3ad @ May 17 2009, 08:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>yes, there is a stamp on the tray that looks like an old fashioned globe...if you find a stamp on it, I'll take a pic of mine and put it up for comparison...do you have any pics of the pipe?No stamps at all, it's completely plain, so it is a knockoff. I don't mind though, it's a good pipe. I much prefer the way the trays fit on than KMs and Myas and so on.Thanks
Sonthert
There are two main brands of Egyptian hookahs, Magdy Zidan and Khalil Maamon. Both have knock-offs, but MZ knock-offs are far more common. 90% of the knock-off Egyptian stuff I see is lower quality MZ-like stuff. Only 10% is KM-like, since KMs require more metal, making the rip-off more expensive.
ilikemyusername
i dont understand the point in knockoffs, why don't they just make thier own shit and slap a label on it?or not.
Bookworm
and the MZ stamp arrives!
Sonthert
I agree, but the point is confusing consumers into thinking thats its original or that its as good as the original. Do you question if the product is original or whether you like it or not? I assume you've smoked two apple (AKA Double Apple) flavor. Nakhla is the original, everything else a knock-off of Nakhla, but who sits there and says "Im not going to smoke Al Fahkerina Double Apple because its not original."? Nobody? If you see my point. mohinder
The place I bought it from mentioned no brand, it wasn't claimed to be one and I didn't know what one was at that point either, it was only recently I noticed that it was the same shape as an MZ, but I assumed it was a knockoff because it had no markings, and the qualitys not too special. Its fine for what I paid and it smokes nicely, its just pretty shabby. It actually had a small hole in it but some quicksteel fixed that!
