ColibriDon
Could be. I am out of AF mint and if they are making this stuff differently now, it might be a hood excuse to pick up a tub. ...curiouser and curiouser hehe
mattarios2
well maybe they changed their colors.I believe golden/brownish would mean it still contains food coloring, just gold/brown rather than red. Only color that would signify it having no color would be black, If I am not mistaken, others will chime in.
Stuie
tobacco isn't black. Even if you wash Tangiers it's a brown leaf underneath. But hopefully it's losing the red dye... that stuff isn't good for me...headaches.
ilikemyusername
i've smoked black tobacco in peru... its black.
ryno
MY friend just got some AF Chocolate and its brown too... Looks more like the old cut. Maybe AF has gotten their QC up a little bit?
wilarseny
Some of the new is like this and some isn't. I have some golden eskandari that's, well, golden, but some plum that's pretty darn red. These are from recent production dates, both 09, so it's not an across the board thing
liquidglass
black tobacco is black. however the stuff the and most producers are using...isn't. So it sounds like they're dropping the dye which could be great for flavor, headaches, etc. Depending on the possible side effects.
Mndgame
I picked up two tubs a couple days ago both with 09 production, the watermelon had coloring and the vanilla did not appear to (although I'm not sure if it usually does). Anyway their vanilla was very good, light, subtle, calm flavor.

Scoop
golden tobacco is dyed.the tobacco wouldn't be golden, it would be brown. once you wet it, it turns darker than the gold color.

Sonthert
Tobacco varies in color when cooked with stuff other than molasses, but it looks like dead-leaf brown, kinda like wood. Sometimes in can be more yellow or orange, but after cooking it comes out brown. Not black, necessarily, thats the color of molasses.Look at the juice, by itself, without the tobacco around it. If its colored, it will appear the same color as the tobacco. If its undyed, it will appear much, much lighter than the tobacco color.

I'll Fakher
heres the pics for those interested (Mint): Anyway, I got to try out the mint earlier today and the consensus:..........- Noticeable improvement over the older batches (07, 08) however still not on par with 06' (not far off though). The mint 'seems' much more 'cleaner' tasting then last years stuff... which for me i found had a sweetness to it (which i didnt like). I didnt get any 'sweet' taste from this, just straight out MINT! The mint flavour isnt as strong as what it was like back in 06, but still pretty strong. Leagues ahead of Nakhla Mint, however still havnt tried the Mizo mint. Anyway, in my opinion: 9.5/10, whereas i wouldve given last years 8/10. and obviously 10/10 for the old school mint!Much better without all the red dye crap... tobacco was still very wet, and no where near as drenched as i found the last batches to be like. no more puddles! Good to see Al Fakher is stepping up their game, hopefully they start doing this across the board and start fixing the rest of their flavours
Giant Ninja Robot
Well, if more reports of these improved new batches come in I may give AF another chance.
newjacksm
there is always some sort of speculation about this but it's always the same.
Kapten Kanel
There was a thread about something similar a few months ago, someone had spoken with AF themeselves and was told that they couldnt get the tobacco they normally use, only some weird type which was super-mushy/ultra-fine cut (like the mint i have right now, behaves very weird). What i want to say is that the cut defineatly does vary...damn...this was a pointless post
