Strange White Goo

[Hookie The Hookah]

So I left my hookah sitting out for about 2 weeks while out of town with the water still in it and when I looked at it today, there was a strange white goo kind of billowing/hanging from the stem in the water. I blew into it and it went away, but I'm kind of weirded out by this. Any ideas?

It's def something organic that grew from the combination of water and sugar in the base. Break it down, clean it really well with: a.) bleach if you are super anal, just be sure to wash it out very well and let it dry to the bone... or b.) baking soda.

Clean it out, disinfect, etc. The moral of the story? Don't leave the water in the hookah for long periods of time.

I had something like that too in my base... I had no idea what it was I thought it was cloth from the outside and I tried pulling it out and it went away... it was weird...

I clean my hookahs the next day and pour out the base water the same day when I am done.

Only time I don't is when I am smoking the same hookah for several days straight....even then it's 4 days tops...only because I have gotten lazy lately.

Sounds like someone on/with their hookah.

I always clean my hookah RIGHT after I am done smoking. I don't even like to let it sit over an hour after I am done smoking.

Don't use bleach. It'll cause the metal to oxidize.

what kind of hookah?

if its a chinese(non mya), it could be the glue they use in it...check your seals

Not sure what type of preservatives are used in the tobacco, but it could be the sugar from the molasses combined with the base water = bacterial buildup. Clean it well.

What happened is like this. When you were smoking the bowl, your water reached saturation point of stuff in the water, it stopped filtering after that. You then left your hookah for two weeks and the most volatile stuff in the water, that might have consisted of small amounts of some interesting solvents evaporated. A good amount of water evaporated, too. The amount of solute(Stuff) in the jar was constant, but the evaporation of solvent made the solution oversaturated. The only place for the solute to go was to shake out as a precipitate. The same thing happens with tap water or salt water, but they leave a white dust, comprised of different stuff. That stuff is the water-soluble chemicals in your tobacco. There are lots of white goos out there, but were you smoking cherry by any chance? The same thing happens in the floor drain where my soda fountain drains to. It creates a greenish rubbery material. I had a hookah jar that I didn't clean for lack of a long enough brush, back in the day, and it built up the same greenish slime. If you let that white goo build up, it might have turned green. It should be OK.

I sometime get really lazy and dont clean out my hookah for weeks on end... never seen any white goo grown on the hookah... only white goo around my house is from.... never mind.

Had the same problem. Just get a long brush cleaner that will fit in the stem and such and that should clean it out good then again clean your hookah after each time ya smoke.
