Let the stem assembly sit in the solution for 30 min. Scrub with your brush again and repeat the soak if necessary. Once the rust is gone, clean thoroughly with water first, then baking soda. goon
Cheers ill have a go of this. The smell of rust inside the stem makes me want to throw it away.
mattarios2
the "green" crap indicates to me that the km stem is brass ... is it brass?

HJ only send me a vase brush and not a stem brush so I have been using the vase brush for both and it doesn't go all the way through, even when I put it in on both sides. Now I won't have to f with that anymore! Yay! I am guessing a shotgun cleaning kit would nicely.
Sonthert
KM uses galvanized steel. In arabic, the translation between stainless and galvanized steel is the same (from what I'm told). When torching the top and bottom of the stem, the heat from the torch (to solder on parts) blasts the zinc from the coating, allowing rust to develop. This has been a problem for about a year and a half. They may have been using low-quality stainless steel, but they are assuredly using steel that rusts now...presumably galvanized or some other form of coating. This is why you can't go wrong with brass cores...no rust. Vladimir
Try a bore snake? Honestly I use CLR all the time and I wouldn't put it NEAR anything I am inhaling. That stuff has probably caused irreparable harm to my body as it is, without putting it anywhere near my hookah! (It would be gone if it weren't just so damn good at cleaning stuff!). Balthazar
This might be a stupid question, but how do you see if the inside of the stem has rust? The fact that I'm even asking this question, does it prove that mine doesn't? I have an old Hafa, supposed to be brass. I'm not seeing anything orange, but there's a lot of small spots on the inside of the stem. Could this be corrosion?

Balthazar
Both. In other words: they don't disappear after cleaning the stem. They're not all over the inside of the stem, but there are a few of them. Looks like small dots, and they're blueish of color.

I was still not very happy that it already had rust/corrosion, but whatever, smokes like a beast regardless. Probably won't be buying another KM for a long time though. I'm thinking a Syrian or Goza for my next purchase.
Sonthert
Oh, yeah...its corrosion...not rust... Which retailer came up with that one?
mushrat
Now Eric, could simply be oxidation instead of rust.
