Adam, you're doing an admirable job of campaigning for your rights and your livelihood here. Is there anything we here on the forum can do to help you? I'd happily pretend to be an NC resident and call "my senator" for you, if you think that will help make a difference. I'll also happily help you research similar exemptions in other states/cities.

Class struggle sells your plight well. I'd stick with it. It doesn't harm anyone to amend the word "cigar" to "tobacco products" in the current legislation, and clearly it would do you a world of good.

Keep it up -- bring us in.

You know, I have been loosing faith in the American way of government for a while. I totally agree with your quote in the article mushy, they didnt do anything to help you start, now they want to close you down with no compensation. They would allow country clubs to continue to serve whatever they want to. I wonder if that has anything to do with the senators membership there? Mush just know that im thinkin about you and your family and hope the best for you guys. Let me know if theres someway i can help.

Invite your senators and everyone to a free day at your bar. On that day, get a number of your favorite customers and have the place packed as a whole event against it. Make sure its mellow enough for a government official, but fun enough that they are impressed. Have it as a free event if you can, or highly discounted. You may loose a lot of money on that day, but considering that or shutting down your biz, which is the lesser evil. Good for a last - ditch attempt for sure.

idk if it's much but I contacted a top editor/major columnist that I know who works for a major paper up in dc...I don't know what he can do, but I asked if there was anything he could do, it'd be helpful smile.gif

i mean....it's nc...and it's tobacco. Something's wrong when the gov't cuts down on a major industry for a state. that's like closing disney world in florida (or all the strip clubs in miami/tampa...lol).

if he can help, it won't be small.

*crosses fingers*

At a minimum, it'd make a big stink

hopefully the two politicians quoted get off their ass and push an amendment in soon. Hopefully it gets in there and the law will be set in Mush's favor and the politicians will be content and leave his shit alone in the future.

We have to be able to do something. Is there an email address or something that we can write to or a number we can all call? We would need to have order and organization so as not to come off as a bunch of angry miscreant kids.

If the local scene has failed to lobby we HAVE to have some kind of impact.

Mush would you be willing to let us put something together to help you? I don't know how much an international online community could help the cause but it's worth a shot.

QUOTE
Sen. William Purcell, D-Anson, said he thought the smoking ban was a good idea and knew that it would shut down some hookah bars.

QUOTE
He said some hookah bars could qualify as cigar bars with some modifications, and the senate will work to get an amendment passed for the hookah bars to stay in business.

QUOTE
I’ve never been to a hookah bar and I don’t know all that they do,” Purcell said. “But I’m not interested in closing anybody’s business.”

Does this bullshit sound odd to anyone else. This asshole wants to shut down hookah bars, which he knows NOTHING about. Then he goes on to say that he knows some hookah bars (which he knows nothing about) will be able to modify themselves to be considered a cigar bar. What a load of bullshit. I thought the point of congress and government was to serve the people? It sounds like all they are doing is serving themselves. This guy seems like a real .

I agree mush, you need to set that asshole down in your bar and show him that hookah is amazing and nothing like ciggs.

Look at the state's legal definitions of cigars. You may find a legal loophole there. If they're definition is loose, you may be able to argue that you're serving cigars. Its up to them to prove you're not serving cigars. You're just grinding them up before use.

Sorry, thats all I got, man.

California's State tax on hookah tobacco is going down, too. I kinda feel weird that the tobacco capital of the USA is more stringent on tobacco than California...its like some bad dream I'm expecting to wake up from.

QUOTE (Hookah_Bob3 @ May 23 2009, 03:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Set up a member's only club. Sell them a card for 5$ that shows they're a member for 1 year. Don't serve anyone who doesn't have a card. I think that's what I got out of the "private club" part of the legislation

The Private members club has to be associated to a charity somehow. You would have to set the bar up as you say above,
but then have a formal connection to a charity and make regular, sizeable, donations at the very least.

I can't go cigar, the cigar bars have to have 60% in sales in alchohol and 25% in cigars. even if you substitute hookah for cigar i dont sell that much beer. sad.gif

Thanks for the support folks. It's looking....interesting.

best thing you can do if you are out of state is make sure this doesn't happen in YOUR state without a fight.

If you are inside NC, write letters to the Editor and make sure you dont let these pricks get re-elected come November.

oh we're still fighting. a few people in the house claim they bare still trying to get me an amendment to add as a rider to another smoking bill. If that works we're ok. If it doesn't, then we go to court.
