There a number of different sizes and threadings, I've seen collections at wholesalers, quite a lot of stuff. Ironically, they are hard to come by and somewhat expensive. I would suggest a flexible tube, like a vinyl tube. I don't know how well it would work, but they're chea and only require scissors to cut. Get a tube where the internal diameter is sufficiently large to fit over the small flange at the base of the bell, where the old downstem was, but sufficiently small to fit tightly. If you can fit one on, use a #4 clamp at the top, over the flange. The tube will only need to be 2-3", you should be able to buy a foot for $1 or $2. Get nylon if you can, if they have it. You should have enough to make three or four attempts at it. Hope this helps. Welcome to the Forum. thnx man, i appreciate it. That sounds like a really good idea. Well today is gonna be a super fun day, im devoting my day to creating a new downstem!!!lolBTW, do you know which stores carry vinyl tubing? Would lowe's or home depot carry it?I apologize to the both of you for making an ass of myself. I just thought the story was reallyrandom and funny for some reason. But i was wondering how long should i cut it? How long should the downstem be?i think it really depends on your vase and how high/low you want your water level to belower water level=more room for smoke but less cooling and too much water just screws it all up.so somewhere around half or just under half your base should be perfect.my econo mya comes right at half way down the vaseyou have to make sure the stem is about an inch to and inch and a half under the half way mark on your base because the water needs to submerge the bottom of your stem in 1-2 inches of water. so id say run your tube about 1-1.5 inches below the halfway mark of your base so its for sure under the water when you fill it up. Sonthert
I don't believe there is an absolute amount water should protrude over a stem. In Syrians, its much, much less. I have one Syrian...if you have an 1/4" of water over the top of the stem, it will suck water into the hose. What you should try is, assemble your shank and jar. Don't put the hose or head on it yet. Add water to the jar, to the bottom of the stem, plus say an 1/8 th of an inch over the bottom of the downstem. Suck through the hoseport. Hard. You shouldn't get water in your mouth. Add more water to the jar, suck through the hoseport. If you get water in your mouth, pour some out. If you don;t, add a little water. You'll get to a point where you just don't get water in your mouth, just barely. If you added a little more, it would be coming up the hoseport. When you get to the point of having as much water as possible, before it would come up the hose port, this is the right amount. Remember where it comes up to on the jar. Add the hose and the head. These willrestrict the flow a tiny bit...so now you can't draw water up into the hose port. In this fashion, a long downstem will have a good inch or more over the bottom, but a shorter downstem will have less over the bottom of the downstem.
