Scalliwag
It's been awhile since I've posted a how-to so I figure a useful one for a change would be appreciated. This one here will make your QT bust that bra loose for ya Now you do need to use a diffuser to minimize pulling water into the hose. Other than that it's a heavy hitting SOB in the end. Now onto the material and tools needed list as well as steps. Sorry I did not take pics or vid the process but it was hard enough keeping up with Shinerbock so.....Parts needed:Mya QT Stainless cake decorator tipTools needed:drill or drill press (a drill is tricky and dangerous for step 4, put it in a vise for that and be damn careful)viseStep drillbit tapered round fileplumbers epoxydisc grinder or cutoff tool3/8" x 1" or longer bolt (for spindle)How to air this bitch out:1) Put the stem in a vise and align at correct angle2) Use step drill to open hole enough to get cake tip into vase3) with a round file tweak off any burrs4) (the next 3 steps only needed if the widest part of the cake tip would look like shit sticking out) Put the bolt thru the large end of the cake tip and tighten the nut to lock the tip to the bolt.5) put the bolt in the drill chuck and mark where you need to cut it off6) fire up the drill press and with an angle grinder (both spinning) cut the cake tip off to desired length.7) Grind any burrs off.8) epoxy the cake tip into the hole and let dry per epoxy mfg's req's9) install diffuser10) smoke a badass QTObviously there are several models besides QT's that this mod will work on but until you make the first one you may want to hold off on drilling a more expensive hookah. Give it a try and holla if you have questionsI shoulda cleaned it up a bit before the pics but Shiner said no

ilikemyusername
does it really make that much of a difference?i would think hollowing out the stem holes and epoxying a thicker more robust downstem would be a bigger, better upgrade.
clickhea
video of it in action, not of you making it.. sorry
Stuie
interesting.Notice any difference scalli?Cool idea, i am afraid to screw up my QT Stem.
Scalliwag
okay, let's look at the physics guys. What is the most constrictive (i.e. smallest hole) part of the QT? The downstem is about 1/2" ID. The original adaptor tapers down to 1/4". If the ID of your hose is no bigger then you won't see a difference. It's no different than running a larger less restrictive exhaust on a high performance car. Can you really tell from video how much resistance someone is getting from their hookah? I could post a vid if ya think there's something there that would tell the tale? It just makes for an easier draw which is a fairly common complaint with lots of Mya's in general.

Tyler
Haha, my old boss made some badass hoses that used gold club grips on the handle, some plastic tubing, and some nice copper hose/base fittings and wrapped them in a nice synthetic silk.
ilikemyusername
wouldn't it be better then just to bore out the hose port?
Scalliwag
unfortunately there is not enough room to bore it much at all. the OD at the threads is about 3/8" it's only a 15 minute project if you have the tools

inino
Let me play devils advocate and ask about water being pulled in the hose. With a bored hose port and pulling harder do you suck water up?

So I got to thinking and I *think* what is going on is that since you are pulling the same volume of smoke but with less pressure, the lower pressure does not try to pull as much water into the port.I was expecting to try and hit with the same amount of pressure which would result in the same volume of smoke in less time. But in reality it's not a very natural way of doing it. Does that make sense?

The sad thing is that these QT's keep going up in price! Up to $45+shipping now. Almost the same price as a nice 30" hookah. Hell, the Hobo hookah is $60, only $15 more.
