Heat Management With Small Tangiers Bowl

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, i recently got a small tangiers bowl and i am having a few problems with the heat management.

i am used to smoking out of small Egyptian heads, or the small mod bowls which really only require 1 QL and they smoke very nicely. with my small tangiers bowl i throw on 2 3King QLs or 2 CH QL's. it smokes OK, but i do not get very thick clouds and even my base is not filled with smoke. if i throw on a 3rd chronic hookah QL the smoke gets really thick but gets harsh.

i am currently smoking Al Fakher and Nakhla with my Tangiers bowl. the al fakher i dont pack down very much at all, but i do quite a bit for the nakhla...i get the best smoke this way with my other bowls.

my only other idea would be to throw on 3 chronic hookah QL's, but have the third coal standing in an upward position (so only the smaller part of the coal is touching the foil). i have not tried this yet though.

my hole pattern...three rings; one on the outside, middle, inside, with a hole in the middle. i am smoking out of a cheapo chinese hookah, because i sometimes smoke outdoors i dont want a nice hookah to get damaged. i will be investing in a nicer one for home soon happy.gif

i am really trying to get the heat management down, so that i can finally try the tangiers guava i have acclimiting right now.

Thanks Edited by EternalSoil

With my Jet Glass Phunnell, what i find best with AF is to pack it in, but not push it in, so do fill up the bowl but dont pack it in hard like Nak or Tangiers. I also usuallly use 1 or 1 and a half Ql's. I break up 1 tablet into quarters (so 4 pieces alltogether) and place it around the bowl. I usually get better smoke with AF this way instead of using one full QL. I think AF doesnt need as much heat as Nak anyway, so IMO spreading it around can warm the whole bowl up more quicker without burning it. Edited by namenone1

It may not be a heat management issue, it could be a leak.

Before you put the bowl on, cover the top hole where the bowl would be placed, and suck through the hose. If you are getting air, there is a leak.

Listen to ^. Break the coals in half and spread em out. On a small phunnel 2 coals cracked in half work wonders for me (that is with coconaras) you may need 5 halfs (2.5 cocos with the CH coals)

thanks for the help. i was unsure if i could break the CH coals in half. most of the time when i try to break the 3King coals in half it usually ends in disaster...pieces everywhere ohmy.gif

i also checked for a leak, there are none. i will try another bowl tonight. my oh my the CH quick lights STINK when youre lighting them. Edited by wesclrg

My guess is more tobacco. smile.gif

Yes.. more tobacco. Fill it up! Just pick it up out of the tub (hopefully, you keep it in an airtight tub, right?) then drop it in the bowl.. and keep dropping till it's piled up, like, half an inch above the rim of the bowl. Don't pack it down. Don't sprinkle it. Don't wash your fingers with water, or put water in or anywhere near the bowl or tobacco. Cover with tinfoil. Poke a shitload of small, or half the amount of larger holes in the foil. Small = Needle, large = either toothpick or fork tines. The center phunnel hole should only have maybe 1-3 small holes, or 1 big hole poked above it to allow clean airflow. Otherwise, all holes should be poked around the outside of the center hole. The 3 ring design works best for me. 2 red hot and ashy CH coals on top at first, when they shrink to half the size use 3 or add a windcover. Eventually you'll need 3.

This is more or less how Eric does it. Right, Eric? 'Cept he uses a fork 'cause he doesn't wanna get his manicure dirty. I say.. get your hands in there! tongue.gif

Shit son, 1/2 an inch?? I always try to pack it just a tiny bit above the rim, then press it down gently to get it rich at the rim, if not a tiny bit below. BUT, I have seen vids of people doing it your way and it works for them. Just seems like a lot of baccy to use/waste. I almost never smoke an entire bowl. Also seems like you would burn the shit out of the baccy that way. There wouldn't be any air at all to separate the foil/coal from the baccy.

OP, you might try using the tea light mod. A lot of the people on here don't like it, but it works wonders for me. I can't get a good bowl without it.

I don't throw the unsmoked stuff out.. I always put it in a pre-smoked tub with other pre-smoked flavors, mix 'em together, add a little fresh Tang ('cause it's juicy) to it, and voila.. a completely different flavor to pack in there. And I save the pre-pre-smoked stuff too in the same tub. I do this till all of the shisha is charred and the tub is empty.

It's also possible to just take the foil off (most of the charred stuff is stuck to it) and pick out any leftover charred stuff, then refoil it and keep smoking it. You can do this maybe 3 times on the same bowl before it's all smoked out. This fixes burning the top layer too. Whenever the coals die out, just pull the foil and replace with new foil and coals. bingo, and I'm going to add that 3 rings works for me, pack my tobacco above the rim, and I don't do a hole over the middle.

Probably more tobacco...

...but don't rule out the Charcoal Gnomes...

those damn gnomes make my cocos burn funny, sometimes they burn quickly and put off lots of hat, others they burn slow and not so hot.
