Hookah University Degree

Recommended Posts

After reading thousands of posts in this great forum for years I am thinking of writing a book that collects many of the opinions and experiences in an ebook.

Also, we should start a certification degree of hookah science.

Any hookah guru could write a test about hookah culture, preparation, shisha types, accessories, coals, and other topics. Depending on the mark they will receive a certificate that would solidify and prove their hookah knowledge and could be used for bragging right too.

- Hookah Professor: he/she can become a faculty that can contribute to tests.
- Hookah PHD.
- Hookah Master.
- Hookah Undergrad (w/o honors).

There are so many geniuses and inventors that changed the face of hookah smoking while keeping some of the old traditions.

I do not know what to call the book.

I was thinking:

"Shishology 101"
"Hookology"

What do you think?

I know, I have too much time on my hands. It is June and the weather sucks outside. It rains alot in here and I am bored.

As goofy as an idea as that is, I like it. Another way to go is for someone with more ambition than me to make a hookah quiz on funtrivia.com. It could be like 10-20 random questions about the what nots of hookah prep and smoking. Then, based on your score, you would fall into some kind of category like gunsboy said. Someone do it!

Hookahs couldn't have origonated during the Ottoman empire simply due to the fact they're depicted on some of the victory steeles in Egypt and also on a monument dedicated to Akar which date to roughly 700 CE while the Ottoman Empire was established in 1299 CE.

Again, man? Seriously?

OK, from Wikipedia:

QUOTE (Wikipedia)
The Shisha or the Hookah was invented during the time of the Abbasid Empire in Baghdad, Iraq. It was invented by an Arab man and was first introduced to the fifth Abbasid Caliph, Harun Al-Rashid between 786 AD - 809 AD during the Golden Age. Shisha or Hookah then spreaded all over the Arab and the Islamic World.

I was mistaken on one point...it is the area that was to be the Ottoman Empire...but before the Ottoman Empire. It was not invented in India.

"Hookah" is the most common term. Originally, hookahs came from India as a form of coconut waterpipe, and is more aptly termed toward the implements from that region. "nargileh" is the Turkish term ("arguileh" in Lebanon), while "shisha" remains the term popular from Egypt to Saudi Arabia.

The Hookah's origin traces back to India. It surfaced in the form we know it as today around the 15th Century when Indian Glass manufacturing began as a result of the exporting of glass to India through the British East India Company. The glass base was called Shisha.

The hookah is said to have originated in India, or perhaps even as far afield as China. In the 17th century, smoking sheesha took off in Constantinople, where it is known as nargileh. Nowadays, hookah-smoking is a seemingly unbreakable social habit that, despite a vigorous anti-smoking lobby, is growing in popularity, especially among non-Arabs.

The origin of Hookah smoking can be dated millennia back and its initial traces have been found in the North Western provinces of India alongside the border of Pakistan in the state of Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Hookahs of the ancient times were very simple, rugged and archaic in design. The initial Hookahs were crafted out of a coconut shell base. The Hookah headed for Persian Kingdom and made its way towards Pakistan, Afghanistan, many parts of Asia and Arab parts of Northern Africa.

I take back my Egyptian statement, it wasn't hookah they were smoking. But these are the things I've found in the first few googled searches. I'm not saying you're wrong, as you're probably not, I'm just saying what I've read/heard/seen, as even these sources have conflicting dates.

Background
Hookah smoking is an old and deep-rooted tradition in the Indo-Pakistani subcontinent as evidenced by excerpts of historical references given in annex and translated from Urdu into English by Sajid (see also Figure 1).

From the study you posted about hookah/ciggerette smokers.

Hookahs weren't invented in India. They were invented in the Ottoman Empire. Its a common misconception.

What do I win?

I'm in Gunsboy...how do I get a BS in hookah?

I'd say you probably already have a PhD

I think your PHD thesis should be to get to the bottom of the origin of shisha with pictures, dates and names.

Then, we elect a group of your peers to review the materials and sources. Then you will be the first to receive a hookah university graduate degree.

Since none of us are still smoking out of coconuts, I think it's safe to say that the device we would now associate with a hookah most definitely came from the Ottoman Empire.

Not trying to question your knowledge or start an argument or anything, but one thing we have been told numerous times in the college I go to is that wikipedia is NOT a credible source. I can actually go in there and type that I was the creator or hookahs if I so wanted to.

Edit: Eric, I am not saying you are right or wrong as I do not know, just suggesting not using wikipedia to back yourself up. Edited by delSol_si

There's nothing wrong with using wikipedia if the info you're using is actually properly referenced. Peer-reviewed journals, for example, operate similarly wherein background information is provided and referenced from previous publications. It just becomes a matter of then verifying the source material tongue.gif

Well, Sherwood, actually it was invented before the Ottoman Empire came into being.

Del_Sol...I was quoting Wiki, not you...smile.gif

It doesn;t really matter, does it? If I were designing a Chemical Plant, I wouldn't rely on it, but can you rely on anything you read on the internet? I don't think so...That is, Wiki is not a credible source because its changeable and from the internet...so why are we interested in using an external source to make an inherently unreliable source (ourselves) less unreliable? I don't footnote my posts...what if I'm full of shit? How do you know anything factual somebody says is reliable here? If I hadn't have referenced Wiki, would my post have had more truth value? No, of course not, so my statement remains at the same truth value...uncertain. I'm certainly not going to footnote a book on the history of hookah...nobody does here, so what sources are we left with? People's sayso?

Eric is very much in the right on this: It doesn't matter. Unless one of you have done the research first hand and can prove this fact it doesn't matter how many instances of X fact you post, there's always a margin of error that will allow for something to be wrong. I don't care if you use Wiki, it is a very good reference spot for quick facts, but be weary as it can easily be misleading and just wrong. This whole situation escilated into something rediculous. Drop it and let's smoke some hookah and talk about how good Lime Tangiers is going to be biggrin.gif
