iFost
Hey im not sure if this is the right section, but as i smoke hookah it is fine in the beginning and then it starts to get harsh as i go on. If i take the coal off and clear all the smoke out it is good for a little bit but that is a pain. I clean it frequently and have cold water in it. I was just wondering if there was anything i can do to prevent this from happening. Thankyou,Fost
Kapten Kanel
Welcome to the forum We need more info on your setup, bowl type, coal type/amount of coals etc to be able to help you
Matt-641
Well taking the coals off to ash them and maintain the session is all part of smoking a hookah. What kind of coals and shisha are you using?
fineout
setup would definately help a lot, but if youre new heres a few tips1. Dont put the coal directly in the center2. Dont put gigantic holes in the foil3. Move the coal around in a circle (about pi/4 radians) every few minutes4. If the smoke gets harsh blow into the hose (assuming you have a purge valve)5. Read up on the type of coals you are using and see if you are using too many.
Sherwood
These are all good hints, but there are lots of things that could be going wrong. If we're to diagnose your problem, we need pictures and very descriptive step-by-step of how you operate your pipe.My guess is you're not using enough shisha. That's almost everyone's problem. Or maybe some genuine japanese coalsAlso from your description your hookah doesnt sound too great, could you upload some pictures?
iFost
i will try the natural coals out... and yeah i am planning on going in on a new one with some friend the 1 hose doesnt cut it lol... could you suggest some?
JDHarding
Gotta rotate the coals every couple of minutes, otherwise they just sit there and burn the crap outta the shisha underneath them. That's where the harshness happens. Hookah bowls have about 8 points for the coals to sit.. each "side", then each "corner". Start 2 coals on opposite sides, then move them to the 2nd set of opposite sides, then move to opposite corners, then the 2nd set of opposite corners again, then back to the first set of sides.. around and around and around.. S = SideC = CornerO = Center of bowl..... _______.... / . S . \... / C ... C \.. |S .. O .. S|... \ C ... C /.... \___S___/See? Yeah that prolly looks like crap. *shrug* Oh well. The best autoseal pipes are made by Mya Saray. The best possible smoking experience, however, is to be had from quality single-hose hookahs. Those are represented by Khalil Mamon/Mamoon and Magdy Zidan for Egyptian pipes, and Nour for Syrian pipes. Keep at it, and keep reading, and you'll be a pro in no time. Then you can never enjoy anything ever again

The bowl retains heat and helps heat the baccy, ie less coals needed sometimes. It also depends on how much heat the brand of baccy needs. For me, harshness usually means I need to clear out the vase and decrease heat for a few minutes.
Scalliwag
try a bit less shisha to give a little more airgap between it and the foil. Then set it up the exact same and see if that makes a difference. If you make too many changes at a time unless you are really effin up then it is harder to nail down. Try that idea and let us know what happens. twoapplesplease
yea as a few have hinted too ,it seems to be a heat mgmnt issiue and coal ashing maybee.you really got to get to know your hookah and adjust heat pre-emptive like.better coals will help but you should be able to get a good smoke from what you got.try breaking those big coals in half and using them.Start with 2 halves move them around every 2 min then when it starts smoking good take one half off .then if it starts smoking thin throw that other half back on.after that you should move them around every 4-5 min.Its like that old saying a ounce of prevention is like a pound of cure or somthing like that.anyways once the shisha starts burning theres no turning back you have to start all over agin that bowl is ruined.I don't know man hope that helps .good luck happy smoking
RingsMaster
he could be really over packing the bowl 2. from my experience when id over pack real bad all i would get is harsh. your shisha should be at the brim of the bowl maybe a little lower and that foil has to be as tight as possible, no sinkage. Sonthert
I think your OK, just break the coal into halves or quarters before lighting it and use less coal.
