aysegizem
We will be doing some major shopping later on for hookahs for my lounge, but for now I have none and my hubby has finally decided that he wants to learn how to pack a bowl. Uhh, I don't know how to although I know in theory how it should be done. So he wants to hook up with a hookah owner in NY/NJ area who can give us a fun tutorial on how tos, tips and tricks.Any takers? We're not a bad couple to hang around with Ayesha and hookah noob Harun
no longer welcome
i would suggest researching youtube, there are a ton of videos and you should not just watch one. watch as many as you can, it will take some trial and error but it should work out eventually. goodluck

Shoot me, right?I know how to prepare a hookah, but we don't keep one in the house as we also have a 1 year old breaking everything that shatters. So I can't really show anything to hubby. I'm trying to make him get one before the major shopping (when we get 20-30 of them).

If I were closer to you I would help you out, but I live in Illinois. I actually really wish you did live closer because the closest lounge to me is 80 miles away. I think most of the guys on this forum who own a lounge use mya QT's btw. I also know there are SEVERAL threads on here about opening a lounge...may try doing a search for them as they may be a few pages back.
Scalliwag
I'd like to know a little more about the lounge. Are you already open and serving food or ? Are you going to be having any employees. I would rather have an experienced person from a lounge environment running that part of the show. There is a lot more than just packing the bowls going on. We have lots of people on the forum that can teach you how to pack bowls but the guys like Mushrat, Southert, Freezerburn, and others can give you the bigger picture on what you need to prepare for.If you have any lounges in town find out who the best person in the biz is other than an owner and find out if they are happy where they are at. Give them your number and have them call when you can be more direct and to the point. That may sound shitty but there's a lot of good help out there getting lowballed. Their boss will get the opportunity to counter your offer unless it's not that great a job to begin with. Shoot for being the best and remember it will take the best people to get you there. You don't want a reputation as even an "okay" place. Knock it out of the park on the first swing

liquidglass
Yeah nothing personal but sounds like a few more things need to be learned before a lounge can be opened up properly. How to pack, what to pack (how to pack what), types/numbers of hoses, best/cheapest coals, etc. Given you might know how to do most of this stuff but a lounge is a completely different game. Good luck though I'd def help out if I was up there.

You need to be able to sell your product well, but more important is the fact that you have the business skills required. How to pack a hookah can be taught, how to run a business well- not so much. Don't be discouraged by all these nay sayers ! BUT, if I read this wrong and YOU don't know how to pack a hookah, I would obviously highly recommend you get a little more into the hobby before opening a hookah lounge. You need to be confident it is something you want to hang around all day!
gunsboy
Good luck with your lounge. I wish that I can open one here. Most successful hookah lounges that I have been in, in Syria, Saudi Arabia and UAE, use egyptian hookahs (mostly KM's). Usually all of them have Nakhla because it is the cheapest with a decent flavor. I have seen AF too.Biggest thing I noticed is that the good places never used quick lights. Only crappy ones did. Some people do not mind quick lights. But it was nice how the waiters used to walk around with the coals after spinning them and replace your coals for you. I prepped/fixed my own hookah at my friends' lounges for a year before getting knocked up and Hubby never accompanied me. He's very imaginative in other things but prepping a hookah is a bit out of league for this transportation engineer. He needs an on-hand tutorial. *Still being a nagging wifey from the back seat "can we get a MYA now, now? NOW?" *

Glad you've got packing the bowl down which in my post I assumed you had, but a lounge requires a lot more than that (which was my original point)Good luck though. Bulldog_916
You gotta think about speed and technique, those are your biggest worries right now. Security also can be a concern. Here in Sacramento most lounges have security personnel to make sure no one walks out with a hookah in tow. It's expensive stuff opening a lounge. You might wanna have someone at the door as well to card everyone coming in. There's just no room for error anymore with anti-smoking nazis out and about doing just about anything in their power to shut places down or cost them money and customers. The setting up of the hookahs is the easy part, the logistics and finances are the most important part.

Arcane
i don't think you NEED to know one thing about packing bowls or hookahs to run a hookah lounge. you just learn how to manage the economics of it, then hire a hookah expert or 2 and you should be set....now, i guess if you want to maximize your profit...you'd be better off learning the ropes yourself.
