I've seen similar things in coals, I'll answer the question "elsewhere", since this might seem partisan, which its not. Just my observations, somebody was just telling me they just had it happen with a Japanese coal.

I've NEVER seen that happen... It sounds like either an air pocket or more than likely a drop of water was int he middle of the coal and when the heat got to it it just jumped.

I use the coal heater from HS so even if the coal started going nuts, it would more than likely just stay in the burner since it's shaped like a cup with tall sides.
