Phunneling Down A Drain

I recently bought a medium tangiers phunnel bowl from hookah-shisha. I have had nothing but trouble trying to get it to work right. First, i couldn't get any smoke out of it. I put more coals on top and ended up getting a seriously harsh smoke. The next time I tried it was real hard to pull the smoke out, it felt like when you get to the last bit of juice in a capri-sun pack. Not really sure what I'm doing wrong, thought maybe you all would know?? Help a bro out PLEASE!!!

How did you pack it? (tight, fluffy?)
How much sheesh did you pack? (How high in the bowl?)
What type of coals?
Windcover?

Make sure it's packed up fairly full. If you packed it low, it may not have had enough heat to get smoke. Also, check to make sure the foil isn't getting stuck over the hole in the center. Some people poke a hole in the center just over that hole so that it doesn't get sucked down over it. You also might want to look at some sort of mod (scalli for instance) that ensures that the foil doesn't get stuck on the hole (and it takes up some space so you're not wasting 50+ grams of tobacco on every smoke.

I was using a mix of Romman double apple and fantasia guava. packed it kinda fluffy about 30 grams, using coco nara coals, windcover doesn't really fit over this one, but I set on top kinda crooked anyway, wrapped twice with heavy duty foil

Your thinking about it to much friend.


Fill up your phunnel to where it's maybe a few millimeters under the lip. Fairly close to it. Put some foil on with a thumb tac poke holes all around the shisha. You can do a hole formation if you want just make it even. throw 2 or 3 coco's on the bowl. If its a lot of smoke but a little harsh stick to 2.

PS: If your suction is bad or w/e then poke more holes. You have to poke a decent amount of holes compared to a standard Egyptian or MYA bowl.

You'll need about 50 grams for a medium phunnel. Sounds like a 'not enough baccy' problem. Load 'er up, fire 'er up, then suck her down. She'll give up her clouds.

I can almost get 50 in my small if i pack it tight. I respectfully disagree with Joe, Since Romman is in the mix. Fluff it up and drop it in till it's over the rim a bit and push it down with the foil. One piece of foil. Holes all over and 3 Cocos slightly hanging off the bowl in a triangle pattern for the first 10 minutes then move them inward.

Odds are your tobacco level is to low and your sucking down the foil!

I'll also try putting more shisha in it but sometimes 50 grams of shisha for just me and my wife in one session everyday seems like a lot. Guess I'll have to get a smaller phunnel bowl. How long can I leave a hookah bowl out until it starts going stale. Might be a dumb question but should I put the bowl in the refrigerator? I'ma pretty heavy smoker, but the wife will finish in about 5 minutes of weak smoking.

I have left bowls out over night. If it gets up in the days might not be good....never put it in the fridge!

i got a havanna phunnel and still cant get it to work, its a peice lol that may be your problem cause i got mine from the same place

see, I make sure i fill it so its over the lip by a few mil's I don't poke a hole in the center and I don't pack it back down after it's been foiled.
I used to not put alot of shisha in there and instead of a mod I'd slap one of my big AF stems right over the hole in the center of the bowl, and do 2 layers of holes, one around the outside perimiter of the bowl and the other half way between the outside and the center.
Over packing a bowl so the foil touches the shisha works better for me and my style of smoking.

i'm thinking your foil is getting sucked down and sealing off the phunnel. watch the bowl when you pull. if the foil dips, that's your problem.

How do you set up a tea light mod?

1. get tea light candle, try to get one that is better quality that dollar store (use a new one, doesn't use one that has been lit)
2. remove the candle
3. if there is still any wax in the bottom, clean it out really good, the wax will make your session bad
4. cut triangles or humps in the rim, make sure they are at least half way up
5. if your triangles or humps do not touch the bottom cut a slit to the bottom
6. push your finger against it to make the entire foil thing as much of a dome as possible
7. put it upside down over the phunnel hole
8. load the shisha, cover in foil, add coals and smoke

Here is a tealight mod and shisha saver I made, I don't smoke very long as was wasting a lot of shisha, so I decided to make this, saves me a lot of shisha and works well for me. I would suggest just sticking to the tealight mod first though until you can get that right, then maybe move on to this later.

1. i would buy a small tangiers phunnel.
2. and about leaving bowls out over night: completely fine to do it. for a small phunnel you can probably get 2 to 3 rounds of coco coals for AF per head. i wouldn't smoke it for a period any longer than three days. refill base with new water (&ice if you want) and some new coals.
3. don't be afraid of letting the tobacco touch the foil. the thing will use a lot of tobacco...but the clouds will be nutso
