Hi Guys,

Havent posted in a while been browsing just been real busy. Anyway, I'm going into my last year at university this year and I'm starting my dissertation this summer. To collect some of the data for it I need to take pictures (of promotions/advertisments etc) and I will need to buy a camera. I read chinamon's post about his photo shoot so I figured I would ask you guys if you could recommend a good camera or what I should be looking for. I dont want one of those proffesional looking ones. I have around 300 quid ($500 give or take) I just want a good one cause I plan on traveling some after I graduate around this time next year and I dont really know anything about Cameras.

Cheers

I have a Canon SD880 IS and it is one of the best cameras I've ever owned. I love it and it is small enough that I take it everywhere with me but powerful enough that I can print the pictures and frame them. Or my friends are always asking for me to post my pictures.

It has a wide angle lens also which comes in handy more than I realized.

Depends on what you want really...
Do you want a point and shoot or a SLR? (small vs big)
What are you going to take pictures of?

I just bought a used Canon Rebel XTi and I LOVE it.... got it for about $400 with a basic kit lens.

I have a G7 myself, and am very happy with it. The later versions have improved on it alot, with a better lense, and some newer features. They are probably one of the best point and shoot cameras that you can get, without getting a large fixed DSLR type camera, or a DSLR. I'd check into it, think G10 is the latest...

a canon is really the way to go. Personally, i like how fat the shutter is.

Ill be taking pics mostly of promotion material e.g. billboards, buses, posters, events etc but I also want something thats good for pics of scenery and people etc when I'm traveling. I'm not really sure but the camera stuie said looks a little bit too professional/complicated for me? I have no idea here and i'm totally lost.

Cheers for all the help so far.

That stuff is easy to figure out over time and once you do it's totally worth taking the time to learn it. If you're not at all interested in making photography a hobby, then it sounds like the Canon G10 is the way to go.. Or maybe even if you do. It produces amazing images and it relatively small compared to the DSLRs it rivals (though its still no pocket camera unless you have large pockets). It's a good camera all around, wish I never had to sell mine.

I was in a similar boat a while back and semi professional photographer told me Nikon D40 and sent me this link

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40.htm

Loved it ever since I got it!
Great camera for the price. Had mine for a few months and love it.

As for it being too complicated to use. It works pretty well on the auto shoot function, so that helps you take pictures straight off the bat, however they give you so many more options to fine tune all of your settings later on once you have the time to learn. Once you get it just keep messing around, read some online and you will get the basics down pretty quickly.

For your price I would suggest the Rebel xTI. Personally i dont like canon still cameras. Granted their HD video cameras are top notch. (Video is what I do) Personally for still cameras I would rather buy a Nikon, but our uses would be different. See my area of expertise may be in video, but i do also do photography to sell, sometimes as stock, sometimes as print. RIght now i do exclusively 35mm Black and White. It's only because I cant afford a digital camera that is good enough quality right now. Also the school does not have a color lab any more due to cost of disposal. But like i said i would check out the rebel for you or even a really high quality point and shoot maybe.
