Smoke Harshness

Recommended Posts

Okay so I got my 3K coals the other day and I'm really happy with them. They give puffy clouds instantly without any waiting, but I haven't been able to get rid of what I THINK is a harshness from the coals. I also seem to be burning the tobacco from the middle out. I do put the coals on the outside only and work them around but somehow it still ends up burned and I end up getting a harsh coal taste. I usually cut the coal in halves and use 2 halves (1 coal) and rotate them around the outside of the foil, but still get that harsh coal and/or burned tobacco taste. Can anyone help me please? The 3K dissolve really quickly and easily so using halves is sometimes difficult because they break apart when I try to lift them up and move them.

what is your hole pattern like? what kind of shisha are you smoking and most importantly whats your packing style.

Pattern: Circular
Shisha: Nahkla
Packing Style: Sprinkled in a little bit over the rim and packed down with the foil

im sorry maybe its not a thread, its a youtube video he made. look up packing nahkla like tangiers or something like that. the idea is to scoop it into the bowl and pack it in hard.

john uses a phunnel
so unless you got one recently truth, john's method ain't gonna work for you
but when you do, yes pack it tangiers
but for now i say
use heavy duty reynolds wrap
are you using 40mm or 33mm 3kings?
if 33mm, it SHOULD be fine without breaking it up
the 40mm IMO will need to be reduced by about a 1/4
make sure after you pack down slightlywith the foil, pull the foil really tight got get just a little space between foil and shisha (when the shisha fluffs back up naturally it will close the gap, no big deal)
you can also pack nakhla tight on the edges and loose in the center if youd like to try that, but then skip the foil pack down
use toothpick for holes
lots of holes, in circles, i like to keep them on the smaller side for wetter shishas to keep the ash out
id do the same with nakhla in an egyptian (big holes on the phunnel tho)
if you do all that and stuff still aint working, i think were gonna need some pictures to diagnosis this issue
P.S. 3kings are a solid quicklight
just because everyone seems to shit all over them here doesnt mean they arent decent

You can pack nakhla (or tangiers for that matter) hard in ANY bowl and it should work just fine.

i find if i pack any brand too tight (or hard as you put it) results in very poor airflow through the Egyptian bowl
which means you have to draw very hard
which i dont like to do personally
just saying

They're 33's. They do break up though when I break it into halves. Idk, I'll try again tonight see if it works.

In those bowls, you need to make deeper holes with the toothpick down to the airholes. Normally what I do is poke the first few holes from underneath by putting my toothpick in from the bottom of the bowl. It ensures a full airflow from the foil directly down the main holes.

I don't like to pack my nakhla too tight for 2 reasons, 1 the reduced airflow and 2 if its packed too tightly I can't get as much smoke, so it sounds like you're packing it well,
what do you mean by a circular hole pattern? try making a spiral with alot of fair sized holes spiralling into the center, then if you're breaking the 3k in half, set one half on each side of the bowl. consequently, how big is the bowl you're using? and, can you get some pictures up?

I must have done something right last night because it smoked like a champ. It was going for a good hour and still had at least another 45 minutes it in but we decided to kill it cuz we'd gone through two coals already but yeah. Thanks for evry1s help. It's fine now.
