Realities Of The Whole Hookah Lifestyle

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am sitting comfortably in my couch, late at night, enjoying a delicious bowl of Nakhla double apple. Everyone is sleeping, the house is quite, the cat looks from far with eyes semi-closed. I watch as the smoke exits my mouth, filling the air with a smell that I still have difficulties describing other then to a fellow hookah enthusiast. I add two fresh lit coconaras; their glow seems the only thing illuminating my living room. Between puffs, I start thinking to myself what, after 9 years of enjoying my arguileh, how this whole experience was new and exciting to me when I started. I then realized that with time, some things became part of my 'quotidien'and that some truths are now facts of life. I decided to share this with fellow aficionados, hoping that we can all share the realities that we now aknowledge.

So, from the top of my mind, here are my realities
- Whatever you think now, you will get better with time and your smoking experience will be optimized with experience
- You will break bowls, shafts and and even vases, to your chagrin.
- You will try, with most passion, to share this new side of your life with friends and families. Some will take a couple of puffs and rest there, some will show more interest, and some will never smoke anything in their lives.
- You will known as the shisha guy among friends and relatives. And, most of the time, if you are as passionate as I, it will probably become your signature thing.
- you will look for hookah lounges/stores to wherever you travel, to try it out or to compare yourself.
- You will travel to Egypt...and most probably you will see that the land of the shisha is not as you imagined.
- Even with the most precautions, floors will be burned, sofa will have marks and carpets will slowly burn away.
- After a couple of years of 'home smoking', no lounge will impress you and you will smoke less and less with a hookah that you have not prepared.
- If smoking becomes part of your daily routine, you will find normal leaving a party/supper at friends house, to go home and smoke a good head.
- You can talk for hours about the hookah world whenever someone asks you about it.
- You will bring your hookah to chalets, friends houses or wherever you can place your hookah safely.
- You will stop drinking alcohol and smoking in order to 'not ruin the taste'
- Many new gadgets will appear, some will impress you (Phunnel bowl, washable hoses) and some will disappoint.
- You will always try to optimize your session by reinventing you bowl making techniques, new products, new tobacco or new charcoal.
- You will create a set of rules when you have friends coming over and they might not understand your dictatorship
- Sometimes the shisha will be bad and whatever you will do, it wont become any better, until one day it regains the full flavor you thought you lost.
- Smoking will always be fun and more tasty with the people you love with you.
- There will be a special place home where you will organize your hookah material, and most probably it will be more organized then your room/house
- You wont like sharing much and end up preparing a second hookah for guests.
- people's weird looks when you smoke in public places will annoy you and you will end up enjoying a big balcony.
- You will think you are the best until someone blows your mind wink.gif
- You wont permit anybody moving your charcoal or light up a cigarette .
- you will recommend to anybody thinking of quitting cigarettes to start smoking shisha.
- You will feel the need to light up from now and then to relax, after supper, after work or after a fight with the better half.
- Some people will think you smoke too much and you will always reply that this is not addictive, even though you see yourself smoking more and more, sometimes to try new flavors, new hoses or just to test a new technique your read or though about
- You will consider a good date idea to bring a gf out or in to a smoking session
- with time, you will seek a girlfriend/wife who enjoys smoking or accepts it
- You will become addicted to the cleanliness or your apparatus and will show your stable proudly to who ever comes to visit.

Allright, this is it for now. I hope you all enjoyed my late night inspiration. So for all new smokers, old smokers and whoever in the middle, share with us your comments, opinions and life changing realities.

I don't know what to say other than you hit the nail on the head. Great thread smile.gif

Hookah is a part of my lifestyle(along with most of us), and if anything it just makes life that much more interesting to me.

I do agree about the fact that mostly you will start disliking hookah bars more and more unless you come across one where the owner is more knowledgeable and possibly more passionate than you about hookahs. Although I will partly agree in the fact that I would like to smoke more at home since it is cheaper.

Beautiful post. And to above, I know what you mean about servers moving coals. Last night I went to one and when we got it, the coal was directly in the middle. So, I moved it to the outside. Not 3 minutes later, the guy came back, trying to flirt with me and then moved it to the middle again. Ugh. I was like serioiusly, just leave.

Great thread. My first experience with hookah was in a hookah lounge. I thought that was the best thing ever!! Went out and bought a shitty 10'' pumpkin style hookah at some second hand gas station that same night. After that I bought an egyptian from Hookah-shisha.com and its been a match made in heaven ever since. Looking to up to a MYA next. Great thread--gets everyone to remininsce about our beginnings. good.gif

That's beautiful, man. Poetic, almost. That basically defines my life right now....wow.

I see that as well. There is one thing missing from that list:

When you stop shopping based on "how good it is", realizing that any quality hookah is capable of top-notch smoking.

....and one more tongue.gif

When you start shopping based on "how long will this last?"....washable hoses fit into this in a major way.

These 2 are the funniest.

You got it down man. I have been smoking sheesha for close to 9 years now. All my dad's friends know me as the King of Sheesha.

I can envision a future where all of these things are true for me. I just want to know when my throat will stop hurting. Every night I tell myself I won't smoke hookah tonight so my throat will have a chance to de-irritate but every night I end up smoking anyway.

I'm wondering if my throat will ever get used to this or if I'll get my "smoker's cough" back like had for all the years I smoked cigarettes.
