How Often Do You Clear Smoke From Your Base?

Recommended Posts

Basically, the titile is my question. How many times? Every session or just some? And how do you know when you need to. I already searched it and didn't find anything.

Depends who I'm with really. If theres alot of people or people that just dont smoke often, usually right when I get it. I'm good at half purging, just clearing out some. Dunno what got me in that habit...

I clear it everytime i get the hose. Just habit from smoking with people that allow the smoke to get stale

This tends to be my practice as well. We like to keep our stuff strong/bordering on harsh so a quick purge makes me sure I'm not gonna get blown out of the water with a big hit. If I'm by myself I usually have a good idea of whats going on with coals/heat so its not as big of an issue.

Never. I've never had a hookah that had a purge valve. I have one on the way, a MZ Kairo. Was sopposed to get it this monday, but it wont arrive until wednesday because thehookah.com dropped the fucking ball (yeah, i'm still pissed off about that)

How fast can you usually clear all of the smoke while purging(Anyone)? Whenever I try to purge on my MYA's I have to blow as hard as I can and barely ANY smoke will come out!!

I thought it was normal but now that I think about it, that can't be right!

Mya's are a bit more of a bitch to purge because as Sonthert said, there design is at fault. Now even though im fairly plastered currently, lets see if i can go through this; Easiest fix is to take a bendy straw and put it in the bell in the end of the purge valve, and down into the vase further. Want to get more complicated and permanant then your going to have to get good at braising wink.gif

Thats because its a common bell Mya. You can't clear smoke out of a common bell Mya. Another reason to get a closed bell, like a KM.

I know I should just google it..but what is the difference mechanically?

With a common bell like a Mya, when you blow through the hose, since the hose port and purge port sit next to each other in the partially closed off bell, your more or less just pushing air through the hose, and out the purge. With a closed bell design, when you blow air through, the air enters the smoke chamber, and is able to push the smoke out due to circulation, or something.

Take that as you may, jack is talking, not El biggrin.gif

Basically what EL said. If you blow through a closed bell hose, it forces air into the jar. The water doesn't compress too well, so it increases the pressure on the ball bearing in the vent, which should pop it up and vent the jar and the tubes in the bell.

In a common bell, you blow air through the hose and it stops inside the bell. It creates an increase of pressure, but equally, across all the holes in the bottom of the bell, which prevents the pressure from leaking out...since the air wants to go somewhere...it has nowhere to come back in from, since all holes are having a relatively equal positive pressure. Its easier for the valve to open and gas to leak out that direction. Some open bells have non-symmetric holes. I don't think this makes a big difference, I have two, but maybe somebody came up with something I haven't seen. If you take a bendy straw and attach it to the vent and poke it out through the bottom of the bell, now the gas to vent has to route through the jar, emptying the jar.

An application of this is pouring liquid from a can that you used a can-punch to open. If you only punch one hole, the liquid is trying to go out the same hole that air is coming in through...so its hard to pour. If you punch a second hole, the air can come in through the vent hole and liquid out the pour hole.

I usually clear it out a few times per session. If you aren't smoking it steadily then it should be more often to clear the stale smoke out, but if you're smoking it steady its really only necessary to clear it when you're worried it might be burning or there is too much ash in the bowl.
