FamiliarJoe
QUOTE (Sonthert @ Jul 12 2009, 07:07 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Basically what EL said. If you blow through a closed bell hose, it forces air into the jar. The water doesn't compress too well, so it increases the pressure on the ball bearing in the vent, which should pop it up and vent the jar and the tubes in the bell. In a common bell, you blow air through the hose and it stops inside the bell. It creates an increase of pressure, but equally, across all the holes in the bottom of the bell, which prevents the pressure from leaking out...since the air wants to go somewhere...it has nowhere to come back in from, since all holes are having a relatively equal positive pressure. Its easier for the valve to open and gas to leak out that direction. Some open bells have non-symmetric holes. I don't think this makes a big difference, I have two, but maybe somebody came up with something I haven't seen. If you take a bendy straw and attach it to the vent and poke it out through the bottom of the bell, now the gas to vent has to route through the jar, emptying the jar.An application of this is pouring liquid from a can that you used a can-punch to open. If you only punch one hole, the liquid is trying to go out the same hole that air is coming in through...so its hard to pour. If you punch a second hole, the air can come in through the vent hole and liquid out the pour hole. The bolded part made it click for me Thanks Sonthert! I will have to rig my MYA so it can purge easier I guess.
redjako
Mostly every hit with a lot of heat..if its dying on me, I won't. But its a negligible difference.
dakur001
Strictly on an as needed basis, which usually works out to no more than 1-2 times per session, myself. I can see how this would absolutely be something that would have a great deal of variance based on personal taste, though.
engineonmute
i've never even considered counting this.but i clear the base whenever the smoke is harsh
Spats
When it gets harsh from neglecting to move the coal. Depends on the shisha, depth of pull and heat management. The more experienced I get (I hope),the better it gets.

seefoodlover
The only time I ever purge is if the smoke gets harsh, and then I have to move the coals. And even then, i usually just fight through it and keep smoking

Atleast with my Chic that's what happens. If I blow lightly, it's usually okay.
Sonthert
Short hookahs are more likely to "Bao" water into the bowl. It can be too much water, but usually its because its short and has less distance to go...
ColibriDon
My evening smoker is a multi-hose obelisk with auto-seal valves so...never. Really makes me watch the heat but I rarely even move coals once they're in place anymore. Just throw two more on in their place when they get small. indian_villager
As soon as I pick up the hose and right before I put it down.
Joe Chicklets
If it's a quick moving session (either I'm smoking a lot or everyone is passing it quickly) I only feel like I need to do it once or twice. But if someone gets the hose and ends up talking for 10 minutes without smoking, then I do it more often. Crys
yeah for me its always dependent on the people smoking...if everyone is keeping it moving I only clear it once in a whole session maybebut if its slow I sometimes clear each time before my hit
