When they're bone dry they last longer.

TheScotsman
That is just making dry wood, not charcoal.A small sealed retort is necessary to make "real" charcoal.you need to exclude oxygen from the carbonization. I use a foot long piece of 8" steel pipe with a slide on cap on one end, and a 3/4" vent pipe on the side. It's more of a PITA than it's worth, but fun just to say you did it. Zinite
I wouldn't do it. You run the risk of inhaling too much carbon monoxide.
Scalliwag
I wrote a pretty detailed thread on doing this here http://www.hookahforum.com/index.php?showt...amp;hl=charcoal
indian_villager
Make sure you use hardwoods. The softer stuff will burn too fast and hot. and in the thread stuie put up read my little how to so you can make a quick small test batch.
VDDZ
And research the wood ur using, some can produce toxic fumes, even after being cooked.side note, did u know that there is a species of pine tree that produces a resin that, when the tree is burned, can explode? They discovered this in Yosemite park when they were attacking a disease that was killing the trees; they would burn the disease trees and, to their surprise, some would explode violently! They called them dynamite trees
Coyotero
If you eat coconuts, you can clean the shells and burn them till they turn into hard little embers. They don't last long, but I keep them around as a last resort.
TheEVK
As for burning a log and using the coals, I can't say i haven't done it myself. We made sure the log was dry, and though the coals burnt a little hotter and a little faster than i would have liked, they worked alright. Not something I would suggest for every use, but it can't hurt every now and then..EVK
