Hookie The Hookah
so recently whenever I add the second round of coals to my tangiers bowls the smoke thins out big time and becomes terribly harsh.... any tips/ideas? Letting the bowl cool off for a while and then adding fresh coals seems to be fine...

The first round of coals was wonderful, though

ilikemyusername
I find this same problem with almost any shisha, my solution is to let the bowl cool a bit and place the coals in different locations from the first set, and I don't move my coals much in a session, I use ronco's philosophy of "set it and forget it!" r1v3th3ad
ya...when I first start up tangiers I use three halves of 3Ks, then when they are almost gone, I only use two halves
Arcane
here's what i usually do when i need to add a second round of coals...1. started with 3 or 4 canarys burned down halfway.2. push coals towards center - if it burns well, i add 1 canary on top of the lit coals3. if there's little smoke/flavor, i place 1 canary on top of the coals and add a windcover.4. when the new canary gets lit, i place it in the center of the bowl and another canary on top of the newly lit one.5. at this point, you can tell if the windcover is needed or not. so use it accordingly...6. after that...there should be 2 coals on the bowl and just place another new canary on top of an old one, when its halfway burned through. AmunRa
I agree with most of the above. Less heat for the second and progressive rounds of coals works well. I let my bowl cool while I light the next round, and it is harsh for the first hit or two. But it goes away quickly.
redjako
Oops can't edit, meant that the Flavor goes fast with Exotica's many times.Pack that stuff pretty dense, and prepare for glory
Sonthert
Yeah, less heat for the second round. Sometimes, if the bowl is out of acclimation it will take a lot less charcoal on the second round, like the equivalent of two quarters Golden Canaries. If it goes wacky, take half the charcoal off and wait a few minutes and then gradually add charcoal back up. Sometimes, the harsh period will only be for a minute after putting a new coal on. Its less traumatic to not chuck the old charcoal, but just light one or two quarters up and add them to the old coal.
