Spats
I won a pipe on eBay and am curious as to the bowl it used. It's dated about 1955 from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and made in India for pilgrims to sell (for travel funds) on their way to Mecca (as per the "provenance"). The hole inside the "head's bell" is about 3/8" in diameter. I can't imagine the "bell" was filled and smoked (500 g. might fill it!) so I'd guess it had a clay bowl... Anyone care to venture a guess and where I could get a bowl for it? Not really looking to smoke it (dunno if I could clean eons of non-use from it) but it's definitely a pipe for the collection! Stuie
Not real familiar with the antiques, mushrat or rivet might jump in and shed some light. But if I remember what I have heard correctly. Nope, there is no bowl missing. That's wear the tobacco goes. They used Tombac and put the coals right on the tobacco.
momatik
I second that. It actually is the bowl. Personally, I wouldn't smoke out of that. Beautiful antique.

AmunRa
The coals go directly on the tobacco for the tobacco that was most likely used in those type pipes. So, that is the bowl. I've never seen a bowl that big before though.Nice find!

Sonthert
Normally, a rock or an unlit piece of charcoal is what is used at the bottom of the top chamber to stop tobacco from getting sucked down.
Spats
Thanks for the replies on this pipe! I doubt if I'll ever smoke itas it's been a display pipe and is kinda grungy (but I know Icould clean it up). I have to somehow repair the hose a bitand am on a hunt for some yellow heat shrink to match aprevious repair...Yeah, that would definitely be a hellofabowl full of tombacor the like to huff through a single hose. I love eBay!
