TizaNabi
The Turkish government had called for a public ban on smoking calling it "terrorism". Just now the law went into effect. Want to see them enforce this one.

Sonthert
A Middle-Eastern friend told me that Turkey follows Istanbul to Europe. If Europe says ten is good, Turkey tries to go fifteen. Europe is acting like morons regarding smoking, so Turkey follows suit. I was under the impression, perhaps mistakenly, it was smoking indoors in public places that was being banned in Turkey. TizaNabi
I messed up the quote link to the below perceptive statement : "A Middle-Eastern friend told me that Turkey follows Istanbul to Europe. If Europe says ten is good, Turkey tries to go fifteen. Europe is acting like morons regarding smoking, so Turkey follows suit. I was under the impression, perhaps mistakenly, it was smoking indoors in public places that was being banned in Turkey."
******************************************************* As in our Jewish Torah law, with a certified Kosher Rav , questions come up about situations in abnormal or changed circumstances, especially in time or place. The same for Moslems who have a Mahdi and they can judge if something is Harum (Kharum)-"not allowed". Actually we use the word both in Hebrew and Arabic as "forbidden". (i.e. "I forbade my son to eat dogfood ,past the time written on the package"). We say "Cherem", they say "Kharum,"you say potatoe. Not only in Turkey, but the whole question of smoking in general and hookah included is a question being asked in Moslem circles and also Jewish all over the world. For a number of years its been asked I know to some of the more generally accepted Rav's (Rabbis) of our generation. Some have come out against smoking on the grounds of "Love your other as yourself", (second hand smoke), more so on a very basic law "You must guard your soul in your body very ,very much". "Very" is said twice once for the soul and once for the body, also to stress that the two as wife and husband must be at peace & healthy. I'm just touching the surface. We do have a law that tells the Rav (Rabbi) or judge :"Donnot pass a law ,decree or amendment that is know for certain the general public cannot possibly fullfill". Which is why so many "Orthodox" Torah Jews among the men smoke. If a law should be passed against smoking, the Rabbis might and most of us would quit. But ethically its not right according to Torah standards. Back to Turkey, the government has been secular, non-religous since General Khamal Atturk reformed the government and banished the Mahdis from power. Being that Turkey has been a democratic country in the last elections a majority of the Parliment were Religous Moslem along with a coalition from a few added sources, evidently giving them the power in public to stop smoking. I heard this on today's broadcast so I'm not sure if its only outside smoking, or in a Tea House in public zones, etc. Here in Israel hookah is Kosher and not cherem for anyone everywhere (except maybe in a dark cinema where democratically you can { ? } yell "Fire,Fire" even if there is no smoke or fire. Mahir
Ok...to clarify....It's in public places indoors. Like for example....in the mall, in a bank.....on the busIn Turkey, before this was a law....smoking was allowed everywhere and anywhere

theotherone31415
guys relax...this is actually popular amongst most turks and honestly i think it's great. i HATE cigarettes and this is what that targets. i won't be smoking hookah in a bank or the grocery store anyways...like here, this is exempt in hookah bars.what the hell is wrong with that?and for those who hate on the government...the people support this. we're not in an Orwell novel; ease off the misplaced hate
Sonthert
Yes, but what about the next round of more strict rules? Perhaps banning hookah lounges altogether?
theotherone31415
I'm not going to say that that's impossible - but it is highly unlikely right now. That would be like banning apple pie here. assuming apple pie caused emphysema.
