Holy Jeebus, People!

How in the f#%@ing-hell do people ingest/inhale/cope with this much nicotine??

F#%@ me! Tried a hookah for the first time a couple weeks ago but it wasn’t really fired up, just thin smoke, good flavor, but no volume; didn’t feel a thing. Very misleading!

So yesterday my new hookah arrives in the mail (what can I say, I’m infatuated!). It came with some sample packs so I fired up some Romman peach. I’d read the reviews, which mostly said “minor buzz” or “moderate buzz” or “almost nothing” so I figure no problem right?

Wrong. That silky smooth smoke lulled me into a false sense of relaxation and then WHAM!

<Begin Flashback>

Gee, it sure is amazing how a non-smoker like me can get a lung-full without even a cough.” Pulllllllll, exhaaaaaale, ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

I don’t really know what this whole ‘buzz’ thing is supposed to feel like but I sure don’t notice anything.” Draaaaaaaw, exhaaaaaale, ahhhhhhhhhhhh…

Ten minutes later…

I wonder if it’s supposed to be anything like something else I smoked once?” Pulllllll, puff, puff, puff, “oh look, a smoke rin….Hey, I feel kinda—“ Hiccup! “Eww, that tastes like tacos! That’s funny ‘cause I had tacos for dinner…”

The world gets a little woozier…

Geez, things feel kindof all sidewayz and skittery… sorta nervous and—“ HICCUP!

Ugh! Think I’ll just set down this nice new Nammor hose and hold on to this chair I’m sitting in for a while ‘till it stops spinnin’…”

Once the nausea had passed enough for me to move again I made my way to the couch and promptly fell asleep for an hour (it was midnight after a long day). I woke up long enough to put everything away. Gagged at the super sweet, sticky smell of the peach shisha, so I just put the whole packed funnel bowl, shisha, foil, and all, in a snap n’ lock and went to bed.

I swear when I woke up 5 hours later to go to work I still felt a hum somewhere in the center of my body.

I really hope there are some lower nic shishas out there or I’m gonna need to figure out how to enjoy smokin’ with a lot less smoke.

Either way here’s a shaky newbie “salute“ to those of you who have built up enough tolerance to enjoy your passion. You may not even notice it any more, but nicotine is a powerful drug, so stay well!

Oiz!

Hrmm... there's a decent chance something else was going on:

1) What kind of coals are you using? If they are quick-light discs, make sure you light them away from the hookah, and that they are completely lit before attempting to use them. You might have inhaled a large amount of carbon monoxide.

2) You might have an allergy to something in the shisha. I've heard about it before, but never any first hand accounts.

3) One of the mistakes I made as a newbie was not keeping myself properly hydrated. Make it part of your hookah routine to fill up a glass or two of water or similar drink as your coals are lighting. Same goes for having some food in your belly.

4) Make sure there is some ventilation where you are. Carbon monoxide is let off from the coals and can build up in a small room. There are many cases of people vomiting or losing consciousness at hookah lounges that lack ventilation.

Welcome to the forums, it's a great place with even better people.

Thanks, Z,

I've done my research (been lurking a bit), but always worth reviewing...

Used Coconara coal, only 1, lit it over a gas burner. I chose this based on comments about Exotica and CO and not liking the idea of inhaling whatever accelerants they use to get the quick lights going. May have been a bit impatient, started pulling a bit before it was totally ashed, but it was close. May have been a bit dehydrated, but not a lot. I was outside so there was lots of ventilation. I'm fairly aware of CO issues and don't think it was that (no headache, which is a very common symptom). The nausea was actually kind of secondary to what I perceived as a buzz. I also experience nausea in a hard to detect way. Don't usually know it's there until it's too late!

How would you describe your first nicotine buzz? Lots of guys say they throw up the first time they try chew from the strength of the nic and also feel dizzy, but what do I know?

Haha. The only time I felt like that was just a couple nights ago when I packed a nice full bowl of tangiers maraschino cherry. I didn't get nauseous but I was definitely more buzzed than I had ever been. It literally put me on my ass. I didn't leave my seat or the hose for quite some time. Edited by dizzbizz

I am a nonsmoker and get the same results a lot. I get effed up off hookah pretty easily. I have also noticed that I usually get major headaches if I smoke too much. It also depends on how often you smoke. When I was in college and smoking every other day, i was fine, but now that I am home for the summer, i have smoked probably 2 maybe 3 times and every time I get a headache and feel like crap afterwards...until i get back to school and smoke more, i have given up on the Mizo line, lol.

very cool story lol you made me feel like i was in the story lol any whoo, i think that was just your cherry being popped by some good shisha and a good hookah. nothing wrong with those symptoms cuase wen i smoke too much thats exactly how i feel. a nice little ice pack on the back of your head and you should be just fine. the next bowl you smoke dont put so much tobacco and take it easy. baby steps my friend!!

Yeah, buzzing/spinning/nausea are all things I associate with a killer nicotine high. Your story reminds me of when I first started chewing tobacco, lol.

But even the washed tobaccos have a lot of nicotine to smoke by yourself, particularly if you're just starting out. I mean 0.05% by weight doesn't seem like much, but when you're smoking a phunnel with 40g of tobacco, you're looking at 20mg of nicotine. If I remember correctly the average cigarette has less than one miligram. Edited by Svaals

Let's just say my biggest buzz I went to use the restroom and missed the toilet.....
Oh, and I bent down in my seat ot change the coals and fell straight on my butt. After this all occured I asked my friend why I felt this way and she said that it was from the nicotine. I never knew you could get buzzed from nicotine haha

I was super buzzed the first 2 months or so smoking. I could only safely smoke one or two bowls per day without making myself feel like I needed to lay down for an hour while the world was spinning.

I get this same reaction still if I drink mixed drinks/martinis while smoking (and it doesn't take much of the combination either. ie-1 homemade choc. martini, 4 sips in, 1st bowl, 10 minutes into it.)...

So yep, I know where you're coming from smile.gif

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was the nicotine. Any kind of a "reaction" would likely have continued to get worse when I stopped, while this totally leveled out as soon as I quit. I'd heard about the nausea so I tried to pack a smaller amount in the bowl (smaller vortex bowl), but I'm sure I didn't even get through half, maybe not even a quarter of what I packed! I just hope I can keep smoking the peach, but I guess I'll know that when I go to clean out the bowl and get a whiff of that shisha again. I don't know how I'd pack any less and still get contact with the charcoal, unless there's a trick to that? It'd be cool for a newb like me to be able to be able to put some sort of inert filler in most of the bowl with just a small amount of shisha on top while I get acclimated. Any ideas?

I still get hit by everything I smoke except AF. Not that hard, just really chill. I like it.

That sounds like what happened to me when I got a nicotine high from cigs for the first time. I loved it. I nearly fell over but the feeling was pure euphoria.

I've been able to reduce the level of sick-inducing nicotine buzzes from OG Tangiers and other high shit (like Pharoah, which mostly sucks) via WARM WATER.

It makes a HUGE difference IMO.

As well as the other advice points: fully lit coals (even on insta's), etc.

When I smoke some good shisha from my MYA QT alone I normally hit a point in which i need to take a ten min break. We're talking super duper hookah buzz. After a few min it's all good.

Take it slower next time forsure, when you're using the hookah as an oxygen tank your bound to run into some issues!

LOL! I like the O2 bottle reference. A little too accurate actually.

I like the reviews I've read of Tangiers lucid. Would that maybe be a good one to try, taking other advice here about pacing myself and moderation into account?
