I wish to aid my friends here by settling this once and for all!Grommets and eyelets are metal, plastic, or rubber rings that are inserted into a hole made through another material. As an engineer I deal first hand with custom molded rubber parts and I would categorize it as a gasket based mostly on its sealing properties. However thats just me and the way Holz Rubber Co. categorizes parts. Other companies could do it differently. So from the looks of it this is going to be ongoing debate for years to come!
