Nakhla Trouble

I bought a kilo of Nakhla Sweet Melon a few weeks ago because we would go through the 250's so quickly. The first couple sessions were great - smell and taste were the same if not better than the previous 250g boxes. Now the entire kilo can has a very interesting smell and taste it. I don't even know where to begin describing the weird funk to it... almost a urine-like smell (and no, no one peed in my Nakhla). There is still a slight melon-taste to it, but the mysterious smell overrides it.

I have been acclimating it for over 30 hours now. I just transferred it from it's original tin to a huge lock n lock container in case something was wrong with the Nakhla tin. I also added just a little bit of honey.

I am open to any suggestions now... I feel like I wasted 30 bucks worth of tobacco. It is borderline unsmokeable.

sounds to me like someone peed on it!
in all seriousness though, I've never heard of a problem with sweet melon, sometimes its not melon-ey enough but it gets better with acclimation, but as far as developing a new flavor....one that tastes like pee....thats odd.

Not that I know what pee tastes like :-P

It's just a very overly sweet smell, almost acidic like a chemical or urine. It's not pleasant to smell or smoke.

agreed. sweet melon is the only flavor that gave me REAL acclimation troubles out of every nak flavor, and i believe i have tried just about every one sold in the states.

i closed it for a couple days when i had trouble with mine, then re-opened it, let it sit for a few hours and it was good to go!

I'll go ahead and do this. I'm sure that over the course of the last week or two It's already been closed and acclimated many times in a row, but another try can't hurt. Thanks guys.

i bought a kilo of sweet melon a while ago. the 250g boxes seem to be much more reliable - haven't had a problem with them yet. i don't think i'm going to buy another kilo tin of the nak again., esp sweet melon.

mine tastes very salty and almost bitter when smoked for a while. very disappointing and a waste of 23 bucks. as we say in texas: horse shit.

The human sense of flavor and smell is very prone to suggestion. Large containers of flavoring often smell ghastly. The larger the amount, the stronger the smell...sometimes to the point of not smelling right.

I don't know if that makes a difference. It might be acclimation. Try sealing it up for a couple of days and see what happens...

I've been considering splitting it up in to smaller batches and seeing if that gets me anywhere.

I just got some Nakhla Sweet Melon (50g) and I'm not sure what it smells like. Actually it smells like that Fig stuff you can put on bread :b A faint melong smell though. Haven't tried smoking it yet, but I've been acclimating it for the last couple of hours. No change really.

This if the first time i try Nakhla, and it's quite a bit more dry than the stuff I've used (which i can't remember the name of..). It's meant to be like this?

Nakhla is very dry compared to other brands. This is partly because of the packaging they use. Wax paper and a cardboard box doesn't exactly keep all the juices in. If you buy the jar or the kilo tub though, it's as wet as Tangiers.

I did this last night. I took about 200g out of the big batch, and acclimated them separately overnight. I definitely noticed a different smell when I compared them, but I don't know if it was progress or not.

Good news:

Separating the tobacco into smaller batches worked! I acclimated 200g of Nakhla right next to the big tub. The 200g lost the funky smell over night, while it remained in the big batch.

NEVER transport the tobacco directly into the tin. The tin has a tendency to oxidize when it meets any acid in the flavorings. I had dark areas of juice that were on the tin and realized after a second that the tin was oxidizing and quickly transported the tobacco into a bag and then put that into the tin.

I figured it might have had something to do with the tin, since that's the only difference between 250g of melon and 1000g. Thanks for the additional info.

aren't the tins coated?

i did this with my 250g of nak strawberry without any problems and it smoked great!
