mattarios2
QUOTE (HookahJohn @ Jul 22 2009, 03:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>hey mattarios, i have seen that too, but that was a sneaky way of doing it. I could have snuck in a so much if I wanted to but i respected his wishes. You should have seen his face at the end of part 1 when I said now you'll see the man himself and panned to myself, that's why his finger comes to my face. it was just a bit of comedy added to the "how to"hope you guys liked.I have my own method that is working for me, obviosly not what I did in part 2 but it's good for many of you to know how sonthart wants it done so now you've got it straight from the source.lol yeah i figured that was the case.thanks again, John and Eric! contristo
thanks for the vid. way to go beyond the typical shipping tactics in posting hands-on videos for free. it really encourages people to try certain methods out. that method looks like it takes a few tries, especially if a hookah vet messed it up, but i'll give it a shot. i use a very similar method to john's with the toothpick and i don't poke a hole over the phunnel, mainly because coal fragments have a tendency of being sucked in and deposited into my hose. i don't know how he manages that without it happening.get some lucid orange soda is stock though! haha, one of my favorite flavors. Sonthert
Heheh thanks for the positive feedback.I am one of those people that whenever they go somewhere, I pick up a local accent or mannerisms very quickly, especially when I like the people I'm around. Some very nice people from North Carolina had just left a few minutes before John actually filmed this. For some reason when he started filming it, I found myself with some weird accent, even though it wasn't there when the North Carolina people left. After a minute or so, I realized I was doing it and I couldn't stop. It would have seemed stranger. At the time I thought "Well, now I have culpable denial, if the video doesn't turn out well." . Edit: I really have a problem being on film, hence me not being filmed more often. I clown around a lot anyways. It was really tough for me personally to do this for you guys, so I hope the end result was appreciated. Sometimes it happens when I'm on the phone with people, too, if they have an accent. If I talk with my relatives from Michigan on the phone for a half an hour, I have to spend a week getting rid of the subtle Mid-Western Michigan/Indiana accent. So, don't trip. I made the video for you guys, I hope it helps. The foil test is to check how much tobacco is actually in the bowl, to minimize the the variances in the density people have when they take it out. Also, in terms of heat, Japanese charcoal burn cooler and slower when first lit than Quicklights or Coconuts, so the coal amount is less than it would appear. There was a shortage of Japanese coal about 3 years ago, and I found myself trying all sorts of coals. I found with 3 Kings that about 3/4 of a 33mm was a good amount on a smaller bowl, broken up into quarters or 4 quarters on a large bowl. Most people use smaller bowls, not larges, so 3/4 is about right. The bowl we used in the video was a very large Tangiers phunnel and a large Tangiers phunnel. If you were using a small, I suggest 3 Golden Canaries.
Sonthert
QUOTE (Chaz1337 @ Jul 22 2009, 12:33 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Great video! However I have one question about the Foil Test. What exactly are you looking for when you do the foil test? Do you want to be able to see the phunnel ring or not? How do you know when you are under or over packed? Thanks John! You're looking to see the amount of depression in the foil, between the top of the bowl and the squished down tobacco. It should be about the width of one $.25 piece...or two. Somewhere around there.
