So I Just Had To Have One

Recommended Posts

OK so after I saw the HJ video of how Eric packs a bowl http://www.hookahforum.com/?showtopic=32013
I said to myself "Self ,,you must get one of those special bowl packing tools"

So yesterday I was having dinner at the restaurant where the lobsters seem to have a sunburned color. And when they bring me my food, it comes with a special bowl packing tool ohmy.gif

I dont know what shrimp have to do with Hookah but there it was. So after dinner I asked the waitress is she thought it would be a problem if i borrowed it. She looked at me funny and said "SURE" (I rather ask than just steal it,, u know)

So here it is.. I cant wait to try it,, but I gotta order up some lucid..

John sells them.

same one and for $3 you get a dozen of them.

Unfortunately all the ones I have found are funky... 2 wide tines, 9 inch handles...even wood ones.... weird crap... of course I am in Texas... not big oyster country around here.

FWIW- Go with John's original forks!!! The tines are not parallel
and I believe that adds to the increased bowl packing success!
I know it definitely requires more skill to poke holes in foil rather
than tearing it up wink.gif Two tine forks don't count, nor does Oneida
silver plate!

Way I figure it, buy local (John) the big guys (amazon.com, et al)
DON'T need the $$$ and could care less about the individual
(John is ALWAYS there.)

No, not a shameless plug for John, just I prefer to "shop locally"
whenever possible. The extra cost is more than worth the
customer respect shown!!!

I had been looking for one of these recently too then I visited the parents and lo and behold what was a whole drawer full of? Oyster Forks. so either they loved Oysters before i was born more than I know or they are expert tangiers packers lol.

So I took one, part of my inheritance I'm sure

One? Why one? Why not the whole drawer?? smile.gif

I got my oyster fork from an awesome fellow hookah smoker. He bought a bunch and shipped one to me and a few others for free smile.gif

thanks spats, i didn't do this as a huge money maker, just as an added service since it's hookah related, yes you can get them much cheaper on amazon and i'm turning a small profit but that's the price for a small service. you can buy a dozen but do you need a dozen, and then doing a group but may be too much hassle, but they are there if you want them, no worries. i personally still use a toothpick and not an oyster fork, so there. when i'm the consumer i look for the cheapest price as all of us should, but sometimes paying a little more for convenience is worth it. now, if you could only find hookahs for a fraction of the hookah vendor prices i'd be sol.

does the oyster fork really make that big of a difference?

I wouldn't say they make a huge difference in smoke quality, but I always use one just because i don't like getting my fingers all icky before i have to foil a bowl. i also don't use it to poke holes, i just use a toothpick like John.

obviously to me hey do, you saw my attempt at using one? utter mess. that's why i like a toothpick better, however, eric with tangier's is the most calculated person in this industry, in a good way, a way that benefits the end user. most manufacturers or importers only care about wholesaling products and squeezing the retailer for as much as they can and couldn't care less for you the end user. thats is his method that he passes along to you. you are the end user and are free to decide. it will take some practice and if you listen to his advice on this method it will work.

I've had a lot of success lately with the fork method, yet, I don't have an oyster fork so its neigh on impossible to punch holes with a regular sized fork: rips the foil all over the place.

When I get into buying an oyster fork, I may go with hookahjohn mainly because their is ton of variation within oyster forks, and for the shisha, you're gonna want thinner / longer tines.

I personally have troubles using the oyster fork to poke holes myself, I am much like John, I make an utter mess out of it. Plus, I tend to like my holes a bit smaller. Then again, when I use the fork, I tend to be able to get by with less coals, which is a plus.

As others hand said, the fork really is handy because you can scoop up the baccy into the bowl and poke holes with the same tool.

a couple of things, i do like a regular fork for packing the tobacco but never poke with it.
second, you need to hold the foil tight and push through at an angle to make sure you slice through the foil rather then tear and end up with results like i so miserably did.

I got one for free when I ordered about two kilos of Tangiers from Hookah Company before. I use it religiously, totally worth spending money for it.

OR your other option is to go out to dinner, spend $120 on dinner and ask them if you can keep it... wink.gif

The fork is da' bomb for stirring shisha (doesn't rip or pack it) and makes it
easier to get into the bowl. Big + is then it's part of "your stuff" and you
aren't accused of looting the flatware drawer!

Foil poking is fine. Just rock the fork left to right or right to left rather
than stabbing it into the foil. All hail "the fork"

I have a recommended fork for the occasion. I bought hundreds of forks off the internet just to inspect them. For you guys. I have two recommended seafood forks after looking throught hundreds of them. I selected them based on a number of criteria, including cheap price. I used to use Walco brand oyster forks, either of two designs...the newer ones are too thick to be useful. So, I researched more forks...for when I need more.

My #1 oyster fork pick:
Boston Oyster Fork

My #2 Pick, A snail fork. The tines are about 3" long:
Nantucket Seafood Fork
