Jumbo Tongs from Hookah John:

and a cookie mold that I use as a coal carrier (similar to these):

I just press the halves of the tongs together, place the sharp tip onto the coal, and give the end of the tongs a few thwacks with the cookie mold. Bam, smaller coals.

the only time these things failed me, it was not a coal, but a rock covered in coal dust (....apparently someone at the natural charcoal plant thought that would be funny as hell...I was less than amused).

For cutting coals i use tongs like these

And for carrying coals I have a little hot sandwich porcelain tray. Its about the size of a sandwich, with raised sides and a small handle and works great

Ones on the left run $6-$10.

Works BEAUTIFULLY for Exotica: for 1/4, 1/3, /1/2" pieces.

Cuts Coco's nicely.

3K for you insta light suckers as well.

Cut exotica PRE light

Cut everything else POST light.

These are such a seriously good investment for hookah purveyors.

Stuie, I don't cut coals, but I would highly suggest going to Sears and buying some Craftsman snips of some type. That way when/if they break, you get a new pair for free....lifetime warrantee. Hell, even if they get dull, just take them back and say they don't cut anymore. I used to work at Sears and we took and replaces pretty well any hand tool as long as it said Craftsman. We were on commission and didn't get a cut for hand tool exchanges, so we just wanted to get them done as fast as possible, didn't really bother inspecting the tool. Heck, if your Sears was like the one I worked at, you could probably get a cheap pair, break them, and trade them in for a more expensive pair. Not saying it will work, but I know I have giving someone a $30 ratchet before when they turned in a $12 ratchet.

+1...... I have something similar to the ones on the left...... i originally got them for a friend that couldn't break exoticas by hand (she's a tiny girl, not being sexist but she just isn't as strong as either of the guys in the house) and now i find myself using them because they are so easy to use..... they do tend to leave little flakes everywhere but not really any worse than snapping them by hand.

I've tried the tong/knife method and found it to be severely lacking.

Back when I used to use Exoticas, I used my dremel tool with cutting attachment to score my coals then just snap 'em. I could knock out an entire box in less than five minutes. The only downside is that it's kind of messy with coal dust flying everywhere. So I'd just do it outside. Problem solved. smile.gif

stuie, what coals are you cutting? for exoticas or rolled finger coal i used to just tap them with tongs once lit and they would break easy, i never too k the time to pre cut coals. i did however a few times hold exoticas on either end and give them a quick break by slamming, well not slamming, into the middle of the coals onto a hard surface like a grill on top of a stove to snap them apart.

I don't think any knife will work you need to use a serrated knife

Only if you're thinking inside a very small box. With a machete you either hit the coal straight up, or lay the blade on top of the coal, and pop it with a small log. Depending on the coals you use this type of cut can actually waste less, and in any case it's probably much faster.

okay that was a joke i dont use a two foot jungle of death machete for my coals. But i do use a failry large non-serrated old kitchen knife, but a pocket knife works just as well. Score it a little and give it a wack with a hammer
