Tyler
So, I've been smoking SB 90% of the time, and for this, 3K coals and my Mya QT and Stargate work flawlessly; however, when I do smoke Tangiers it's just kind of like I know something is missing. I'm assuming this has a lot to do with my coals. I've never used natural coals, only 3K and some random other QL that I bought when I ran out before my order arrived once, but anyways. I was wondering if anyone here uses a Stargate or Mya QT with tangiers [I have a med phunnel] and what kind of coals you use to get the perfect session? Also, what is needed to light said coals, how long does the coal last once it's lit kind of thing tooEDIT: If at all possible I'd like to not have to break coals into pieces such as finger coals Edited August 9, 2009 by FSUReligionMan
mattarios2
if you don't wanna break coals and you neeed a suggestion for tang, hands down Golden canaries all the way. They are low heat which is perfect for tang but they dont last long, dont give off a lot of heat and are quite expensive.

redjako
I'll confirm they're about half hour to 45 min. If you are puffing on them constantly, they Could stretch to can hour, you light more coals on Top of them about 20 minutes in, so you have constant heat every 30 minutes. white_rabbit
Well... there are a few options for you:you could try these exotica golden charcoal or coconut coals. and I light them with a electric coil...like thisElectric Coil
Jeff_T
I smoke out of my QT with tangiers all the time. I have a small phunnel and small mnh glass phunnel. I really like cocos or CH naturals. I use 2 at a time and it seems to always smoke great. When I start the session i leave about half of each coal off the bowl edge to not get to hot, then gradually move them inward as the session goes on. After about 45min I throw on a wind cover. I have used exotica easy lights and canarys, but I like how long the CH last and their price/quantity. I'd def recommend getting some tangiers and coals to try out. Could do with a 16pc coco just to sample. As for lighting I purchased a coil burner from walgreens. It was $10 and works very well. Throw the coals on for about 10 min, and setup hookah/bowl while they light up.
Tyler
I'm leaning towards HJ's CH coals, I really like the convenience of QL's but, do the QLs work as well as the naturals? I've personally never got a tangiers session to work longer than 2 1/2 hours with 3K QL, becuase I use 1 3K and rotate around the top of the bowl until i've hit every spot, it's pretty much burnt/flavorless after the coal burns out. With CH coals, will I be able to pull these 5-6 hour session from my medium phunnel like everyone else talks about? I know something is wrong when I can get a bowl of SB to go 3 hours but am happy with a bowl of Tangiers goes for over 2....
white_rabbit
I like CH coals... even his instant lites are great... im still an exotica fan myself...i dont mind cutting the charcoal... and as for having a bowl last 5 hours... you will need a couple sets of coals lol but im not smoking tangiers for 5hrs + lol well i smoke for 5 hours but i like to change flavors lol
Arcane
CH QLs are great coals...if you prefer QLs, I'd get those. if you want something else, Canarys should be one of your top choices.
hookah hippie
I use cocos usually but I am trying out Hookah John's coals not sure which I like better I am using the natural ones not his quick lights
mattarios2
gc's last 35 min ... i prefer cocos over hj only because i found the hj coals have to be ashed or you lose a ton of heat, cocos ... i dont ash and i dont touch them at all, and they always put out awesome heat. Tyler
So consensus, HJ CH QL (we need moar acryonyms!) will work fine for Tangiers?
liquidglass
Personally Exoticas are my coal, I've tried Cocos as well as 2 other brands of coconut coals and something just doesn't seem right when I use them. If you don't want to break them buy the goldens, if you can handle breaking them grab the reg box plus a pair of garden pruners I did a whole box in like 2 minutes. BUT I will say I'm looking into trying the Afire coals and Hookah John's CH coals plus some canaries if I can find where to buy them.
Tyler
I'm just not too into the mess that breaking coals brings, I used exoticas once when I got a sample and they crumbed everywhere when broken up.

And the pruner I just started using instead of my dedicated serrated knife. Because the new ones are more dense the pruner is beautiful in cutting them, plus minimal mess, normally clean with the new style.
gunsboy
I used to be a 3K type of guy. Then I moved to those silver jap coals. After that I tried some Nour and other brands finger coals. Now I only use CocoNaras. I am willing to try other coconut shell brands but when I tried to go back to any other type especially the quicklites. PUKEEEE TIMEEEE. Sonthert
Love the Canaries. I would recommend trying to crack your 3K before you light them, though. Three or four pieces should be good.

Two coconuts on an MNH glass mini can be asking for trouble though (in my experience), these days I do not smoke Tangiers in my glass bowls unless I am looking for a kick-ass buzz, right away.
