NHT = Not Hookah Tobacco... We use it as a replacement for any drug related terms including the name of the drug itself and what is used for delivery... It keeps people from googling drug terms and having us pop up as a place for them to talk...

If its illegal in the US (federally, some states have decriminalized, but its still against the federal law), use the term NHT...

Surprised any bar would let you bring it in, just for the coals and space your taking up.

if i was a bar owner, i wouldn't mind it...just as long as they buy drinks or something. think about it, your regular customer will walk into your bar, hang out for a few...maybe get a couple drinks and then bounce.

mr. hookah asks to set up and you agree as long as they buy drinks...mr. hookah agrees and sits for 2-3 hours. maybe buying 6 drinks...or 12-15 in my case. all the while, you may get people walking by and become interested in some guy with storm clouds coming out of their face. this may draw in more business, so more money for mr. bar owner.

So I finally had my first run-in with the police. I was sitting out side my dorm building with my roommate, his girlfriend, and 2 of her girlfriends. We had just come back from a lamda chi party, sat up in the room for a bit talking, and went out to smoke the hookah. We all were walking outside, and one of the gals said "I'm cold" so I gave her my hoodie then the other said the same, so I set my hookah down and went into the dorm to grab my other hoodie for her.

I come out and there is a cop in an suv right in front of where we were sitting. My roommate and his girlfriend were up there talking to her (the cop) showing her his hookah bowl. I grab my phunnel bowl and take off the foil and go up to her.

Convo:
me: hey, hows it going
her: oh alright, what are you all up to tonight?
me: oh just smoking hookah, check it out, im smoking blueberry and black grape, smells pretty good (i hand the bowl to her)
her: ya, it does
me: its just shisha, nothing else is in there, no NHT or anything. (I proceed to talk all about my hookah and explaining it)
her: alright, i know what they are, I just wanted to make sure you did too
me: would you like me to go get my tub of shisha so you can check it out?
her: no, thats fine, you are alright
me: alright, cool, i know we aren't in the designated smoking area, but we have too many people to fit in it, do you care?
her: no, i don't care where you smoke, you all are just fine. i have to talk to my supervisor about this, you may have to move if he says so, but he should be ok with it
me: alright, well, i appreciate you being so cool about this, you sure you don't want to join at least for a little? it taste really good!
her: haha, no thank you, you have a good night
me: alright, your missing out though, you have a good night as well

The only run-in I had started off tense. We were at a public pool and enjoyed a session at the parking lot. After, we left the hookah standing next to our car to cool down before cleaning up. We just kicked the breeze in the lot waiting.

The cops roll in because of noise of teenagers in the pool at around nine o'clock (It's a gated community, with lots of stereotypical uptight white people). The popo makes everyone, including us, sit at the curb while they take a look around with flashlights.

I was readying a speech to explain what a hookah was when an asian officer sees the set and asks "Who's hookah is this?" Relieved that the officer was already in the know, we raised hands. He sniffed the bowl, checked the tin of starbuzz, then let us go.

My run in was this summer. We were in someones front yard smoking and 2 police officers come up and ask if there was anything they should be worried about in the hookah. I said nope just shisha and they smiled and asked what flavor we were smoking. Super nice about it and it even better that they knew what it was and didn't automatically think something negative. Basically told us to enjoy and have a safe night. I'm thinking I got lucky with these guys.

The key to handling cop visits is to remember the following:

1) the cop is not a battle droid, they are a person...it's best to treat them like one. Most of them are actually pretty nice people....not the most informed at times, but well meaning. Keep that in mind.

2) Their job is law enforcement....they don't write the laws, they can't fix the laws...they just do what they think the law is. Of course they can be wrong at times. This is why court exists, to make sure they aren't wrong. If the cop is simply being an ass, then take it up with their supervisor later....don't be confrontational...it's counterproductive.

3) ALWAYS expect a visit when enjoying hookah in public....uninformed masses will make assumptions, thus police visits.

Apparently either everyone in my area know what a hookah is, or just doesn't care...

I was at a public park that happened to be about a black away from the police station, at about 2 am, with park workers driving around in golf carts, and nothing happened.

I could see the police station from where I was sitting. lol

But the second you pull out a skateboard they're all over you.
