mattarios2
Ok so i have been working on getting the same smoke from santino's one coal bowl as I do with my mini phunnel so i can have quick 30 min sessions. My mini phunnel holds 30 grams of tobaccoSantino's holds about 8-10 i'd say.In my mini phunnel i use 2 cocos cracked in half (4 halves)With santino's i tried one half coal and barely any smoke, so i tried 2 half and it was a little better, so then i tried cracking the halves in half again so i had 4 quarters and the smoke is pretty damn good, just not as good as the mini phunnel. Is it possible to get the same flavor and smoke from a really small bowl as you do from a bigger bowl?My thought process is that with a bigger bowl you have less heat on the tobacco but more smoke being created from more tobacco present creating better flavor from the low heat and massive clouds from the larger amount of tobacco being burned. So a smaller bowl requires more heat to yield the same clouds which equals less flavor and not quite the same size clouds unless you burn it ... ?!Does everyone agree here?I may have to conclude that the small bowl will be used when i am alone and it will have to be a good session but not an incredible session.Don't get me wrong santino's bowl is great but i just think the small size hurts the session.I was thinking of trying 3 half pieces of cocos which is 1.5 cocos which sounds crazy when i say i use 2 cocos on a mini phunnel but i thought about it and the tang phunnels hold heat incredibly well, so maybe i just need to use more heat? But then i thought about it even more and said well the flavor isn't incredible with 4 1/4 pieces so adding more heat will make bigger clouds but even less flavor.I'd say i get 75% of the flavor from santinos one coal bowl compared to my phunnel.I pack the one coal bowl just like i pack my mini, i stuffed it just now as much as i could and it was the best session ive had yet with it, but i can't pack anymore than I did.Any suggestions? Thanks guys

Arcane
i get dibs on your mini if this bowl starts working out for you.
momatik
I can't find any flaws in your thought process. It makes sense. I figure you may just have to take a hit in the cloud department for the amount of flavor you are seeking. Also, I'm assuming your smoking Nakhla (as we all did).If you use something that requires less heat to get it going, maybe you won't have such a disparity in performance between the 2 bowls.. redjako
The same logic Eric uses citing large phunnels at producing the best of sessions. It almost seems like your using a shit ton of heat..maybe pack it more dense, less heat.

Sonthert
Yeah, the smaller the bowl, the less the tobacco, the thinner the smoke. Another in the line of reasons I don't like the mini...or modding phunnels.

I have been packing it as dense as i do with my mini phunnel.QUOTE (Sonthert @ Aug 18 2009, 05:18 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Yeah, the smaller the bowl, the less the tobacco, the thinner the smoke. Stuie
have you tried just one coco uncut?
mattarios2
yeah, gave off even less smoke but that was before i was stuffing the shit out of the bowl, maybe i'll try again with one whole coal.it is an awesome bowl, i just think the size may be causing me to realize that the smaller the bowl the less flavor you are going to get. If you want to make huge clouds the flavor lacks.
Santino
Sorry about the frustration John. Try a few things, first pack the bowl dense like you said you were, right below the holes if not half way up the holes on the wall of the bowl. Take your foil and press it down over the rim of the bowl and into the bowl so you have literally a little dish. Pop your holes and use 1 coco uncut. If that doesn't work snap me a picture of the bowl packed up and ill see if I can give you any other tips.Let me know bud.
mattarios2
ok so it is possible to get the same clouds and flavor as if i was smoking out of a mini or small phunnel? you can confirm this? loloh and for this bowl do you poke holes all the way through the bowl? because i always do for any bowl i use because i pack nakhla pretty tight. Santino
I wouldn't say the clouds are going to be 100% on par with the phunnel just from the sheer amount of size differential. Your flavor should be on point though. And just small pokes through the foil. Putting them deep into the bowl is just going to create airspaces that aren't very favorable to your heat management. twoapplesplease
The best small one coal bowl out there is a small conservation egyptian bowl. Also refered to as a 30min bowl.I smoke mine almost exclusivly. Its not the amount of tobacco you burn rather its the % of smoking tobacco compared to the tottal amount air flowing through the bowl and how fast it heats up to proper smoking temp.If that makes sense.I've tried a lot of different bowls over the years and nothing gives me the quality smoke I get from my small egyptian.Workes best with one coconara broke in half and a on the bowl style foil wind cover that comes up about 2 inches.larger bowls can give you nice size clouds and good flavor but I get the same or better results with my small egyptian and the smoke is a lot cooler and smoother because it uses less heat. The down side is you have to pack a new bowl about every 40 min.Which I think is great because you can swich up the flavor.Plus a fresh bowl tastes better. Bulldog_916
I'd stay with the miniphunnel as the smallest I'll go as far as bowl size goes. Sometimes even that is too small for Tangiers. Depends on the flavor. You need a good amount of tobacco (any brand) in a bowl in order for it to absorb heat. The less tobacco you have, the less the ability there is to absorb heat. The line becomes super thin between too much heat and too little. I think that's the problem you're having. You're trying to find a goldy locks zone that may not exist.
